I must be one of the lucky ones, then. I've had Carrara crash on occasion ("The application Carrara has unexpectedly quit") but never the weirdness you guys are experiencing.

No lights in the scene? Mark, you're insane. The good kind, but insane nonetheless.
I think I know what I'm doing this afternoon....
BTW - how'd you make the pile of apples? I can't be individual ones, can it?

Quote - Here's a quickie I put together. Obviously it can be as cool or warm as needed. Bright, soft and omni directional. Is this close?
Wow. That's just about right. Okay, so how do I pry the Secret from you? :P

Heh - yeah, that, and just the overall ambience of that retail environment. I've tried making lots of tube lights, but that only washes everything out. I've used a buttload of spots, which is more dramatic but hardly accurate. Fah.

I'd like to see a tutorial on lighting for a retail environment. The bulk of my work is for, er, work - a display case manufacturer. I can never get the lighting in my renders to look "natural", that is, like a grocery store environment. Fah.

totally cool! It's helpful just from the standpoint of seeing how another person manipulates the objects. Makes me think that maybe I do okay with this thing...

Just to take a guess... but it looks like those cross sections are crossing the centerline. I wonder, if you bump them above that line, if that might solve the problem?

I'll also point out that (so far- I'm only halfway through Disc 1) each segment is reasonably short - in the five to seven minute range. However, Mark does a great job of giving you complete information.
I went with purchasing the discs because (1) The Lords of Bandwidth at work have cut off streaming media, and (2) at home I have a dial-up connection. But even without those restrictions, I probably still would purchase the set.
Thread: Is It Something I Am Doing Wrong? | Forum: Carrara
Well, not to be glib, but yes, I think you're doing something wrong. Have you checked your light settings? Do you have your camera accidentally embedded in an object? It's a bit difficult to give more specific suggestions without some further details.

Okay, working through the C6 lessons on Disc 1. I've been using Carrara since, well, since it was Ray Dream Designer 3. But I knew there was tons I didn't know, even on basic stuff. Mark has brought my attention to some small but valuable tips. It's well worth viewing it all, no matter what your experience level. Highly recommend purchasing!

Smedley, I'm going to offer my example, now. It's not stunning, or earth shattering, but I think shows how well Carrara can work in a professional setting.

The display case and Poser fig were modeled and rendered in Carrara, and then the cheese and the background composited with Photoshop. It's not perfect, but it is real-world application.

Ordered my sets (Carrara and Poser, too) on Tuesday and they showed up on Wednesday! ...I guess it helps to live in the same state as the shipping locale. :)
Anyway, I've started in on the Carrara tutes, approaching with Beginner's Mind.

Xerxes, thanks for the links. I took a glance at the Interiors product and that might just be the thing. I'll know more about HDRI once I get to that point with Mark's tutorials (which just showed up in the mail!).

I have been holding my credit card at the starting line, waiting for this. Let the modeling mayhem begin!!

Miss Nancy, that's the kind of thing the company I work for manufactures. I don't think Safeway is one of our customers, though. :)
Yeah, ol' Jessie Carrara is a bit on the mean side. She needs a bit of taming. That's one of the things I need to learn.
