An easy way to do it is using an USB hard drive, not a USB flash drive. Basically it's a small enclosure for a laptop hard drive. Recently, Seagate introduced a 100 GB 2.5" hard disk built into a slick enclosure for about US$220. Also there's an even smaller device from Transcend called StoreJet that offers 20 or 40 GB of storage.

It's my understanding that Poser 4/5/6 can only address 2GB of RAM directly, meaning physical RAM. Windows XP Pro can handle 4GB of RAM, but only 2GB goes to any running program. The same limitaion would also be under Windows XP 64, till a 64 bit version is available, since the program would be running under WOW64 emulation. This doesn't mean programs are limited to 2GB. Just like Photoshop can open a huge file; it justs means Windows can only handle 2GB chunks. The rest would be in "virtual memory", paged to your hard drive. This paging is exceptionally slow. That's my understanding anyway.

I guess everyone knows that ClotHer/ClotHim is basically a nice GUI for creating "second skin" mats in Poser. You choose a base "nude" texture, you choose several pieces of clothes, it layers 'em in the order you specify, and saves it to pose / mat. The supplied clothes are pretty good quality, certainly better than DAZ's second skin mats. It's good for undergarments. In particular it makes renders very fast, and you don't have to worry about poke throughs. Also the layers feature is nice; you can have an undershirt over underwear. The skin-tight shirts and pants suffer the same problems with any "second skins" mats: pants and shirts are too skin tight, without any offset

First, remove your wife's hard disk before you do anything else. A virus is possible, but highly unlikely. What probably caused you grief was an incorrect BOOT.INI file, not the HAL.DLL file. Editing BOOT.INI files is a bit esoteric, but I've attached a link to an informitive page. Before you formatted your hard drve, did you delete all partitions and recreate them? If you did have a MBR virus this would get rid of it. Please don't be offended, but I think formatting your hard drive could have been a bit premature.Thread: Annoying Background Problem | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Another way is to save the render with an alpha channel, like Photoshop's PSD, and composite it in Photoshop.

OK, I apologize for obviously giving this way too much thought. Remember tan lines are caused by clothes. The clothes are not painted to a person. For instance a bikini moves, and doesn't adhere to the body in low spots. Personally I'd use a MAT. Tan lines need a bit of blurring, and reduction in strength in key areas. For more realism, two or more sets of tan lines should be combined but slightly offset; this gives the impression of several tanning sessions.

P.S. I was a long-time victim of relay attacks on my mail server from a compromised U.S. Navy machine. How scary is that?

Hackers rarely attack using their own equipment directly anymore. The culprit launching the DOS attack is likely an unwitting victim themselves. I'd guess it's probably one of the countless Windows PC's who've not kept their PC's properly patched / protected, so-called "Zombies". Here's the part where I insert a standard warning here about EVER running a Windows PC without some form of firewall, even for a few seconds. I know this is tough if you're building a home PC from scratch, without a hardware based firewall, to protect you while you're feverishly downloading Microsoft's patches. By the way, contary to other posts I've seen, I've never had a problem when I block Poser's access to the Internet.

I think most of the posters here are confusing a router being compromised with a denial of service (DOS) attack. A DOS attack floods internet connected equipment with garbage. It's not intended to compromise anything, just keep it so busy that it can't handle anything else. Sort of like ringing a victim's fax machine every few seconds. Regarding a DOS attack, I'm afraid you're probably out of luck. The best I can suggest is update the firmware on your router, and hope it handles DOS attacks better, by throwing away the garbage quicker. Most modern and fully patched routers handle DOS attacks gracefully. For instance, Microsoft and on-line retailers are frequent DOS victims. It's likely an attack from a "zombie." Most zombies are compromised Windows PC's, taken over by a hacker for nefarious deeds. The poor sap at 146.82.201.101 probably doesn't realize their PC's been compromised. You should count your blessings that it's not a coordinated attack, from hundreds or thousands of PC. Typically after some time passes, a hacker will look interest and shift focus onto a different target.
Thread: Yet another video card question | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
If you're using the latest Intel dual-core CPU's, socket 940, don't bother buying any non-Intel PCIe video boards, such as nVidia. Stress-test prove it's flakey. AMD has no such problem. Personally I would avoid WinXP 64 for a year. The short story: expect to use twice the RAM to run the same applications, with no improvement in performance. Currently there's very little support for older hardware. The long story: 99.9% of current application run in Win64 XP under emulation, WOW64. To keep the performance reasonably close to the current levels, all 32 bit data is written at 64 bit boundaries, half the RAM is wasted. Next, hardware manufacturers have been mostly unresponsive in updating OLD drivers, such as older printers, scanners, video cards, ... I think the reason for this is most manufacturers except you to but all new equipment when you purchase your new PC, so there's very little incentive.

Thread: OT: what do you use to check email | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
As far as I'm aware Hotmail is the only web based service that supports a downloading client, and of course it's Outlook Express May also want to check out http://www.boolean.ca/hotpop/ "Hotmail Popper is a small application that allows you to check your Hotmail account e-mail from a normal POP mail client (such as Eudora, IncrediMail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera, Netscape, etc)." http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net/ "YPOPs! is an application that provides POP3 access to Yahoo! Mail. It is available on the Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac platforms. Yahoo! Mail disabled free access to its POP3 service. This application emulates a POP3 server and enables popular email clients like Outlook, Netscape, Eudora, Mozilla, etc., to download email from Yahoo! accounts."

I'd recommend a hardware based firewall: they're fast, secure, and cheap, around US$100. (Remember to change to default admin password!) Often they have features such as a wireless access point, VPN access (secure remote access), a network switch and/or a print server. For households with children, it can limit internal users' Internet access based on URLs and/or time periods Since it's not Windows based, it's less likely to compromised. Generally they're pretty easy to setup. By the way, this doesn't eliminate the need for up-to-date virus protection on each PC.This site uses cookies to deliver the best experience.
