The difference between a prop and a figure is that with a figure some parts of it can be moved relative to other parts. If the room that you show were a prop then it would be entirely fixed, but if it were a figure then you might be able (for instance) to make the door or windows open. By the way, your room looks pretty good, except that (in the UK) the door should be 6 ft 6 ins tall by 2 ft 6 ins wide (usually) and there should be some door handles and winmdow handles. Also, for the UK at least, most external walls are either 9 inches wide if solid, or 11 inches wide if cavity walls. Yours look to be about 4 inches wide which is very unlikely for a habitable room in the western world. Back to your original question. A major problem with Poser when rendering solid objects is that its rendering engine rounds off corners which share vertices with more than one face. This is independent of the file format used. When rendering human bodies it's a feature. When rendering things with sharp corners it's a bug. Maz

Valandar, Sorry to be pedantic, (or as I frequently tell my wife, it's not a case of me being pedantic, it's just that I'm usually right) but there is no such thing as hair lip. Hairy lip maybe - which I suffer from - but not hair lip. Hare lip (according to Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1973 edition)is a congenital deformity resulting from failure of certain tissues of the face to join properly during pre-natal development. It is associated in about 50% of cases with a cleft palate. Other references indicate that it occurs in about one in every 1,000 births,in either minor or major form. If the problem only occurs in the lip then there is a high success rate with surgery at 3 months old. With a cleft palate, however, surgery is harder and usually undertaken at about one year. This is not always successful and can result in speech defects later in life. If you ever get the opportunity to examine a hare's upper lip at close quarters (not easy because they run like hell, hence the expression, haring along) you will see that it has a vertical groove or cleft in its centre, and this is the effect after which the human birth disorder is named. I'm not aware of hares actually having a bulgy bit between nose and lip. By the way, I suspect that most hares would not be too happy at being likened to rabbits, and vice versa. How would you like being compared to a gorilla, or a baboon? Or indeed, vice versa? Maz PS. Don't take the last bit too seriously.

Marco, I use 4.2 and occasionally 5 when I can get access. Both show the problem, but I agree the problem doesn't occur as long as you use a factor of 1. I'm surprised you managed to work with a factor of 1 as Poser's scale is so much smaller than Max's it makes it very difficult to do any useful modelling on an imported object. That's why I wrote my Scaler utility. I thought it had become redundant with the scaling ability of the Habware plugin, but because of the habware bug it's still needed. I have informed Habware of the problem but got no reply. Somebody else (PhilC if my memory serves me) also informed them but was told that it probably won't be fixed because Poser's scale is so small.

Marco, Thanks for the info, but it always did work with a factor of 1. Obj2Max works with other factors (eg 100 when going from Poser to Max) but Max2Obj doesn't. If you use a factor of .01 (to go back to Poser) you get the vertices OK but it loses all the faces. Unless it has been fixed in the last few days of course. Maz

You could always import the 3ds file into Poser and then export it as obj format. Or you could do the conversion in Max using Habware's Max2Obj plugin. As long as you don't use its scale function it works OK. You can then use Objaction Scaler for scaling afterwards.

They say your memory's the second thing to go as you get older. 3D Cafe is worth a visit for guns as well.

Thanks for the plug Jim. I wish I'd seen this thread yesterday. I've just e-mailed Habware with details of his scaling bug in Max2Obj an hour or so ago. I don't think Poser stuff being small is an excuse for a bug though. Incidentally, I usually use a scale factor of 100. In other words, 100 when going from Poser to another application, and 0.01 when going back to Poser. Maz

I don't use the programs you mention, so can't offer direct advice. However, I do know that Poser uses a much smaller scale than most other programs so my Scaler utility (in Free Stuff) may be of help. Try scaling Poser exports up by a factor of at least 100. It may help, it may not, but it's worth a try. Maz

OK, constructive criticism you want: constructive criticism you got. 1. Running mascara - excellent 2. Nose - not so good. Nobody has a nose that smooth. 3. Eyes - they seem excessively upturned. 4. Eyes again - not happy with the reflections. The reflections seem to be coming from all over the place. Usually you find one or two highlights dominate in eye reflections. Also, being convex, eyes act as reducing mirrors so you should be able to see a reflection of a whole scene (if you look really hard). 5. Nostrils - too dark. It seems as if you're looking into a dark cavern that has no back surface. 6. Overall effect - very pleasing. Regards, Maz

I've just searched for 'gmax script' on the web and a whole lot of stuff pops up, including several by Chris Cookson. One of them (www.tdp.nu/cgi-bin/ plugread_r4.pl?Type=Import&sort_a=Author - 79k - 6 Oct 2002) is for an obj importer which would eliminate the 3ds step. Unfortunately the link to it is broken. I'll keep searching.
