Thread: All Come Ye Merry Gentle'persons' and critique this photo. | Forum: Photography
The light setup was just daylight on a plain white piece of foam-core. I don't like to use post work on my stuff unless it is contrast or hue adjustment or maybe to remove dust. If it looks soft here it is because I used a +3 enlargement filter on my lens which gives a very shallow depth of field, hence making most of the apple out of focus. Oh geez! There go all my secrets! -Andrew

This one's good. I usually don't say this but I like that she is looking at the camera here. The model's "punch" is in her eyes and the features surrounding her eyes. Excellent job on this one! -Andrew

Very nice photo but I wonder about the sepia or just black and white for that matter. I am a believer in that if you use monochrome prints for fashion photography, the model should be the only thing in the frame. The most important part of fashion photography is that the model stands out. You may have noticed that professional black and white 8x10's of an actor or model show nothing but the face and a black background, hence, no clutter. I believe that if you have a beautiful background as you have here, the colors of the subject, since they are so much different, should be shown so as to draw her into the foreground. Still a beautiful photo but doesn't scream "fashion photography". Am I right? -Andrew

Good photo but I have one recommendation. Tell me if I'm wrong. It seems as though some of the poses are very "planned" and seem like they have been held awhile. You wouldn't think you'd be able to tell, but it definitely shows in this one. Try to use a faster shutter speed and capture your model when they aren't expecting it. Maybe when she's getting into pose position instead of after pose position. Tell a joke and shoot her reaction. Ask a thought-provoking question and quickly shoot her mid-thought. Am I right about the "overposed" look and do you think these suggestions might help? -Andrew

Good use of selective focus. Good location. Artistic presentation and composition. This one works well. Good job.

Great photo but I'm wondering if the model would stand out a bit better without the sepia tone. Can I ask why you chose the sepia? Good photo anyway..

Great photo but it doesn't emphasize the model's characteristics which is what I think you're after. A+ photographer's portfolio C- model's portfolio -Andrew

Thread: Recommendations for 35mm film being asked for now | Forum: Photography
When it comes to black and white, you may give up some contrast but you will find no finer grain than in the c-41 black and white films. Printed on black and white paper, you'll get super-fine results.

Slynky, Here is one man's opinion... There are many iso100 speed films available that offer very bright colors with minimal grain. Such as gold 100 and superia 100. HOWEVER!...There is one film that I have recently stumbled upon that I can not stop raving about. I have had very consistent results with very bright colors and very fine grain. The difference is, it has EXCELLENT SKIN TONES which is very hard to find in the previously mentioned films. What is this miracle film you must be wondering?! Fuji Reala 100 It is an amazing film and you won't be disappointed Slynky. Another option would be NPH but I stand firmly behind Reala. It's not too expensive so do me a favor and try it out. I am very interested in hearing what you have to say about it. I would also encourage others to let me know what they have to say about it. Keep me posted... -Andrew

They are both very nice. Both are dramatic. My opinion is, if you can have an image that is dramatic without post work than stick with that. It's nice to be able to say, "I shot that picture and it my photographic skills made it as nice as it is. I didn't let the software help me." That's just my opinion though. Was this done with a digital camera? If not I would love to know what film you used. Very nice results. I like a lot of contrast... -Andrew
