AzChip.. I know what you are saying..right now carrara rules for things like 3d text and logo spins, but personally I want more. I am going to hold off changing product until the end of the year when C2 comes out. The good news is that on the yahoogroups list Antoine said that some truely spectacular animation changes where on the way.Thread: Carrara and good 'ol Ge Force 3 Video Cards | Forum: Carrara
btw: I am using a geforce 2 mx in opengl mode and it works great. If I remember correctly Antonie said in the yahoogroups that he recommended the geforce line for users with less than $500 to spend on a graphics card.

maybe b/c its so late I am misreading the question, but no video card will get rid of jaggies in your rendering. That has to be corrected with carrara's engine code. the polies that carrara generates are generated with a code base, not a graphics API like opengl or direct3d...other wise your picture would look different between every video card. The cards will help you in the assemble room...the realtime polies and lighting all take advantage of the opengl and d3d api's....but your final picture is a mathatical render that has nothing to do with the hardware on your computer.

I have yet to demo this thing but they have been swearing up and down that there will be no export formats or conversion programs. Its supposed to be customized for games...ie a quake version to only export md1, md2, md3, .bsp files. Also its animation ability is supposed to suck...this is a huge cripple wear thing. Its nice b/c it allows you learn max, but lets face it..I would rather learn miari or maya if I am going to take the time to learn a new program :) I cant wait for carrara 2.0 so I can do some character animation....then I wont be looking at other apps so much :)
Thread: Why are Carrara freebies so rare? | Forum: Carrara

you know everyone thinks I am kidding until they see it...this is one of about probably 20 webrings. I didnt even know such things existed except a few used to be on the featured links section of renderosity last year.Thread: Why are Carrara freebies so rare? | Forum: Carrara
rant mode on I think that if Renderosity wants to boost its free stuff section then it needs to start hosting the files. I hate to do html stuff so that means if I want to use frontpage I have to use tripod. My free space from my isp does not support frontpage. If Renderosity would let me put models up in free stuff I would have done so many many times. As of now I just dont have the resources to host files for other people. The other problem of course is money. All of my models deserve to be free, hell I wouldnt pay for them :) But if you look at the renderosity store I just think to myself, I would never pay squat for almost everything in there...BUT if you look at where the models are going it makes sense. Carrara is for people who really want to create and make things. I looked at poser and bryce...yuck...99% of whats out there is just rehashes of the same stuff. How many variations of Vicki need be made ? :) As far as I can see half the people in those communities are making 3d p0rn and the other half are selling them the objects to make it ;) To sum up: renderosity needs to foster more sharing by hosting the files...even if it would cost me a couple bucks a year for bandwith It would be worth it.

I think what I really want is a tutorial for amapi like litst made for a head in the carrara vm. I have been playing with amapi for about a week now and it is the closet thing I have had to use that is comparable to Nendo. The smoothing tools are the coolist thing I have seen in a bit. After looking at the tutorials in v6 I think I am going to upgrade. I dont really want to, but I think if I stick with amapi then things will start to pay off with character animation in Carrara. I didnt really have a problem with Carrara's modelers but I dont think that they generate the correct type of geometry for animation so I will need somthing a bit more sophisticated. -brent
Thread: Rendered Animation to VCD | Forum: Carrara
go check out nero from www.ahead.de this is the coolest copy program ever...not only does it defeat pretty much any copyprotection but it will encode almost any .avi/.qt to vcd or svcd format. Also they say that they will have a mpeg2 plug-in available soon. I have been using this program for over a year now and I love it.
Thread: SMP | Forum: Carrara
wahoo! its all up and going :) It looks like we had the wrong driver so windows itself wasnt seeing anything. Thanks for all the help guys!
Thread: SMP | Forum: Carrara
well I didnt try any of what you just did, but your screen shots are going to help me a lot. when I get into the office I am going to try to set it up. Neither I nor my IT guy had ever used a dual proc before. Thanks very much for the screen shots
Thread: SMP | Forum: Carrara
yeah well this whole things is weird. I am using a win2000 system. In the environmental section it says that there is just one processor, but in the cpu usage meter that windows has, it shows two processors. To make matters even stranger when I run photoshop or after effects both cpu's show and start working. I just need to make carrara see that second one :) I can already tell that this is going to take many many painful hours to solve.
Thread: Carrara Slowdown | Forum: Carrara
Well I have a Athlon 900 with 256meg ram and a geforce 2 256 mx with 32 megs ram and the interface is still slow. I have determined that the way carrara makes its windows/ui it just doesnt check the mouse fast enough. Mind you its not jerky or anything, it just always feels really laggy. When you move the windows around its just not really smooth. I have found that if I switch to openGL video things are much better. I see you have an ATI tho...they arnt the best at openGL so maybe you should try out D3D? For some reason D3D doesnt work as great for me as openGL but your results will vary by manufactorer. One last thing to check is your system tray. Its in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. If you have tons of little icons down there you might want to shut some of them down :)
Thread: Fire | Forum: Carrara
I do think this is a bug. I just had to make a quickie animation of a birthday cake. I made my own candle and chucked on a fire element. I only edit in one window but as I spun the cake around and did spot renders, the fire only showed up on the front view. Since this was an animation and I did not have anytime to play with it, I just made a stupid flame in the spline room and put on a glow :) If anyone finds anything about this please post up.
Thread: G Buffers Not Showing Up! | Forum: Carrara
Litst...some of the post effects dont apply themselves to the g-buffer. IMHO this is a stupid oversight but what can you do? The good news is that the post effects in Carrara arnt worth using (IMHO) and its just much better to use the G-Buffers in AE or photoshop b/c it seems to be much more accurate.
