Alex, before you go, any chance you might take CobraEye with ya? Just wondering ;-)
I believe I was one who never agreed with the supposition regarding significant differences between bitmaps placed in the terrain editor directly vs as proc functions. If there ever was any difference, it was so very slight I couldn't see it. But, with the new work eonite and ArtPearl are doing integrating terrain maps with functions, there does seem to be good cause for using bitmaps in the function editor now.

Yes, I updated the image and scene file with GI instead of GR, and added a small negative number to artificial ambience which creates more pronounced shading, and rendered in around 2 minutes on my QuadCore.

Thread: Hours to pay by credit card...Really? | Forum: Vue
Be patient, they do all credit cards manually because of the complexity in versioning and licensing. If you don't hear by tomorrow, contact them again. Cancelling and re-ordering will probably only confuse things.

Quote - I will only add in the very near future the recipy for creating clay renders in Vue (a standard 2 minute task on any other renderer, a gruesome trial and error activity on Vue)
Do you mean clay renders like this?
They are pretty easy when you use Environment Mapping. Here's the scene.

Quote - having just got lightwave and had to try to activate that, I can confirm that vue is not extreme at all..
Hardware locks + online registration + activation = somewhat more complicated than vues single step registration.
Couldn't agree with you more. While I have Lightwave, I don't use it because of the hardware lock. Think about it, you lose the lock, you lose the software investment. The president of Lightwave used to be the president of Electric Image. He told me then if I lost a hardware dongle, they would only consider replacing it if I showed them a police report along with an insurance claim. Even so, the process would take weeks. I ended up having to purchase a second copy of EI (over $4K!) as a backup, as my business required I not be without a working copy for any extended period of time. Talk about un-user friendly!
That, my Vue friends, is oppressive. E-on regularly resets my activation licenses without any questions and typically within 24 hours. Choosing one over the other is a no-brainer.
Thread: Vast Scenes? | Forum: Vue
Typically a good vista type scene has both a foreground and background. Some also have a middle ground. Both images you show have foreground which help set scale.
While possible to do using one terrain, I'd suggest using two-- one for the foreground and one for the background. And if you're not going to ecoSystem populate them, then consider using proc terrains as they will be much crisper in detail.

I've heard some have to take it as high as 8K resolution to really do close up work on terrains. I know you'll need 64-bit processing to do that. Good luck!

Jon, are you exporting from GeoControl as a 16-bit tga then importing it as a 16-bit tga?
