Your pictures look like texture shaded opengl previews. Is that right? The differences in shading come from light falloff (the G2 figure is further from the light source) and differences in the applied surface shaders. The G3 shaders seem to have more ambient lighting in them, making them appear a little brighter regardless of scene lighting. If you render the scene with iray, you'll see the shadows and lighting are much the same across the figures. If you have a decent nvidia graphics card, you can turn on iray preview to see this, as well.
If you really want the black effect, I suggest turning off default and ambient light in your scene. Turn off the environment dome for Iray, too. To start, you might use a spot light as the main light in your scene and point lights as secondary light sources. If you want a look that is like the OpenGL preview, you might want to use 3Delight shaders. Iray uses andifferent lighting model. For iray rendering, the Iray preview is the best way to see what's going on in your scene.

VLC has speed control! Load your video, open Playback -> Speed. You have faster/slower and faster/slower fine options. The base buttons increase/decrease by +-.5x, fine is +-.1x.
I have a lot of the previous Packt Blender books. Top notch! But Packt sometimes packages the same books 2 or 3 different ways and it's easy to accidentally buy repeats. Since I bought them on a $5 sale and have bought stuff for $3.50/title, it worked out. But repeats

I agree with Shekhal, Sickleyield is top flight. I've read a lot of her tuts and watched some of her Youtube videos. She omes across as very honest and generous with info. As for what to make, look into yourself and make thngs you would want to buy.

Promos frequently lie, at least fib, especially for bare flesh figures. Dial spins allow for mixing. Mixing is great! Mixing opens the door for poke-through, but also opens the door for unique identity. Number of spinners, depends what the spinner does. This isn't a software issue. It's a non-specific vendor product issue. Without further elucidation, it's a waste of time. It's like poking at the wind.
