They are LOTS better than a mouse if you 'Draw' Because they are pressure sensitive you have a lot more control over what your doing.. With a mouse you select your brush size and no matter how light or hard you push down with your mouse your line will remain the same.. With a graphics tablet you select your brush size and can go from a wisp of a line to a tree trunk.. Total control. I don't have Max but use mine (Wacom) with Bryce. I use my stylus/pen as I would a mouse.. I haven't had any problems with it... All I can say is that having used a graphics tablet I wouldn't go back to just a mouse.

Change the intial model colour to something else.. Ofen you make the body and parts white so that the true colour of the texture map your using shows in a render.. By playing with the colours you can change how a body map will render.

You could try this... Save your render(poser) as a tif file with a plain background. Open up photoshop with the tif file... Select all the background... Invert the selection and copy then paste the poser model into your image...
