Good tip.
I've tried the same sort of thing with an IDL render, plus non-IDL... and / or plus shadows only... and blending it all in Photoshop... and it worked well.
Recently just been using inverse linear point lights, in IDL-only renders though.
Most of the time I just render in one take... and quite often don't even end up tweaking levels, tone, etc, in PS, if I get the lighting right in that take.
I've found the fast progressive preview mode rendering of IDL in PP2014 a big help with the final-render-in-one approach... and firefly is definitely speedier now too, when doing this, I've found.
But the option of mixing down in Photoshop is a great one to have... and certainly affords a lot more control over the final result too.

Nice work Bill! Thanks for sharing too.
Tom Baker was my first Doctor too... and still my favourite.

Definitely a noticeable-to-significant improvement in terms of render times, overall, I'd say in PP2014.
Sorry, that's about as precise as I can be!
The progressive render option, for the purposes of fast, draft previewing, e.g. of IDL lighting results is also really useful, I'd say.
I am possibly seeing much less in the way of render artifacts when using IDL too, by the way... although that may even be since the last PP2012 service release.

All the Scottish-style Police Boxes in Edinburgh, which differ substantially from this design mind you,ย have recently been sold to the public, by the local council.
Most have been turned into tacky coffee outlets unfortunately. At least they're not being scrapped though.
Sadly I was a bit skint at the time they were up for grabs... but, even if I'd had the 60-70 grand spare, I don't think the missus would have let me...

I'll second MLP here ;-)
My dog loves wearing his Ruffwear booties.
Okay... he feels like a dork and looks like a gecko.
But they're good when it's been snowing and the gritters have been out spraying rock salt on the road...

I've just been using Smith Micro's free Stuffit Expander utility to unzip... it handles the merging, which OS X does not do natively.
Works fine when the zip is properly compiled... i.e. runtime (and any docs) folder at the root.
With some zips, e.g. the new Daz zip format, this isn't the case... so I got the more fully featured Stuffit Archive Manager, which allows separate extraction of sub folders within a zip archive.

I quickly put an update (Matmatic 1.6.0) on my site. Have a look and let me know if there are problems.

Wow, that's awesome... downloaded... I will have a look and a play too...
I don't seem to get e-bots reliably anymore, so only just spotted this thread had gone somewhere good!

Awesome set Tom :-) Will have to check it out soon...
I went into trying to do bow and stern waves a while back... similar issues to breakers I suppose... and yes, it was hoopy and I didn't get fantastically far with it, in terms of mat room... did find a few decent models of waves kicking about in freestuff though.
Thread: Is IDL still too strong in 2014? Not fixed from 9/2012? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I usually go somewhere between 0.4 and 0.6 depending on the scene at the moment... but just going by eye. I say "at the moment"... I just managed to make my first render in months over the weekend. But in render that I used an IDL intensity of 0.5.
I guess the main point is just to turn it down enough to avoid the overloading that leads to glowing effects, etc...
...unless you want those, for some sort of effect ;-)

I quite often just run stone textures through EZSkin2, with the SSS option in the second tab changed to marble... and any stone textures in the figure / prop set to "Skin".
Depends if you're using Poser 9 / 2012 or above though... as it needs that SSS node.
It's a fairly lazy and inappropriate method probably... but looks okay to me usually, when I use it ;-)
I used this technique on the statue in my latest gallery post...

...of course that statue model came with a beautifully painted texture to begin with... so the SSS is just giving it a little more zing, I think.

Wow :-) Looks great Tom!
There was some discussion with Ted about modulating wet to dry here, if it helps at all...
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2849086&page=5
It was relative to the wood shaders in your furniture sets.
But I guess the same principle could probably be applied to the sand here...???
Thread: Rendo products not allowed on Second Life | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
When they can augmented reality overlay second life over the boring bits of my first life, so that the symbolic actions in my second life still somehow, simultaneously, cause my real life body to accomplish those more mundane, but necessary actions, I'm in...
;-)
Well... ok, the fear of waking up to find the world is being run by evil machines that are sucking my life energy to fuel themselves, may keep me out still...
:-/
...on the other hand... probably same difference?
