i just grabbed one colour version to crop it in the sense of Doug; so the differences between colour and b/w reside in different conversions of the same RAW file (was Fuji's HyperUtility as the light version doesn't work properly in high key/low key variations...) for the form I take the message that uncropped arms would fit best (not in this shot, unfortunately...) thanks for all replies...

I'd prefer the second one - little blue glow in consequent b/w... (matter of taste, though)
Thread: Remove Scanner Banding | Forum: Photography
Miche, I've no directly comparable results with banding by a scanner (I've a Canon FS4000US), while scanning old slides (~ 1955-1965) I get the problem of spots by fungi as the slides are framed between glasses... I usually try to repair with PSP 7 or 8 without any automatic option of the scanner - which it officially has but which did not work to my expectations in this case...

Doug, your 2nd try comes close to the high key images I had in mind with this part of the series...

sometimes that are (defocussed) dust particles - highlighted by the flash - may also happen with a film camera

as the underlying photo is still dominant I'd tend to keep it under photography - with due explanation of course...

I don't know exactly but from the experience with various digital cameras I have by now: the lamps are overexposed as you got the exposure right for the street; one workaround is to make a series with varying exposure values, another to do the metering on both areas and make two shots with the same view; combining shots may give better results. the underlying reason is that the dynamical range of a "normal" CCD is smaller than that of film
Thread: Choosing a camera. | Forum: Photography
Doug - I won't repeat any arguments, because I hear/have to stand these discussions every day: esential is the fit of sensor and lense, that means f.i. a Nikon-compatible DSLR will give best results only with the best (and that means generally prfessional/expensive) Nikon lenses (replace Nikon by Canon and you get the same); if you have old lenses which were good for film, they will most likely not satisfy you with a digital camera (that's what sales people usually do not tell). My actual images are made with a Fujifilm S7000 - works pretty well but has limitations. With your bird images you'll need a good tele lense and perhaps an image stabilisator (Panasonic). If I was free I'd take a Fujifilm S3 Pro with an excellent Nikon lens (probably 2) (2.000 EUR + lense + accessories + ...)
Thread: Light & Dark in one shot | Forum: Photography
It's not my intention to make promotion for something special, but: for film users the dynamical range of an image is best caught by colour slide film (negative film has become better, but still does not reach slides); for digital cameras there is Fujifilms unique Super CCD SR which - simply said - has two sensors per pixel: for light and dark values, and they pretend to extend the dynamic range by 400%; actually there are essentially two camra models using this chip; test images are indeed amazing...
