This is very interesting! Can I ask what kind of background you have that you can do something like this? It is completely over my head (I have a hard time figuring out what country code number to add to an area code to make an international call). Thanks again for posting both the information and explanation. mdc

Thread: render lighting effect with alpha channel | Forum: Carrara
One point to clear up, You will get an alpha channel but none of lighting effects will be masked. I think Carrara depends on the edges of mesh in the scene to generate the mask edges. The same is true for the volumetric objects like clouds & fog - no mesh-no mask. Checking the g-buffers and having visible lighting effects can at times cause an animation render to crash or error out. mdc

Opps I forgot to say that you can add a sphere that is just a bit smaller than the deformed map object to fill in the open spaces with a second color. mdc

From the Beating a dead torus dept: All in all I don't think that this is a great way to make this if don't need a closed frame. But to get one without distortion make sure your profile shape is grouped and centered before applying the torus preset. Don't set any envelope options.Create a cross section at each of the points on the path before converting them. It looks good then, but I can't find a way to open the closed path so that you wouldn't need to go into the vm for further editing. It seemed like I was able to do this before in rds but I don't model much in Carrara any more. It is easy to select the open edges in the vm and fill the polygons. You still have the mapping problems that come with using the vm, so it's a wash. mdc

Another quick way to get clean mitered corners is to center your cross section in the SM, then apply the torus preset. Use the point convert tool to change the 4 points of the torus path to corner points. If you only need sections and not a complete frame you can send it to the vm for cutting and setting section lenghts. mdc guam usa
Thread: rendering problem | Forum: Carrara
I dont have a real good answer for this, I dont do a lot of animation so I use the really cheap (& free) stuff. I found a copy of Lumiere on the net for about $29.00. It used to be a Corel program but is out of development now. It is easy to use and has a bunch of features. But it does not support some of the latest video formats. I end up building the movie there and saving it as an uncompressed avi then encoding it with something else, like the free encoder from Microsoft. It works but takes that extra step. mdc

Light cones (any visible light effects) do not play well with any of the g-buffers in the render settings. All of them should be off (un-checked) except pixel color. Another thing that can kill a movie render are problems with the compression codecs. Some codecs need specific frame sizes to work (divided evenly by 4 - both height & width) Try rendering to avi with no compression. A better way to do any movie render in Carrara is render to sequenced frames with any of the lossless compression options. Putting the movie together outside of C gives you a whole world of other options and if Carrara should crash in the middle of a render it is very easy to pick up with the last frame rendered instead of starting the whole thing over. Carrara 2.1 adds alot of value and does make the program much easier to live with. mdc my 2 cents worth of (non-spell-ckecked) comments

Thread: Bones are moving out of the mesh!!! | Forum: Carrara
Is your figure a group of objects with the bone set applied to the group? If it is, you might want to make sure the group is closed in the sequencer tray when you move the bones.(the bone group needs to be open to get to specific bones but not the group that is being deformed). This happend to me before and I reported it. Seemed like they said that it was fixed in the patch, but I am on a PC so who knows. mdc guam usa
