Thread: Carrara MacIntel version :) | Forum: Carrara
A few benchmarks for you (done on a 17" iMac 1.83 GHz, 512MB); all scenes are from the scene browser that comes with C5, just open and render: Special FX PalmTree: 1:14 Lava : 0:54 Lava Lamp: 1:03 Global Illumination Cornet HDRI A & B: 0:30 If you have requests, I'd be happy to take them. - Jasen.
Thread: Motion paths horribly broken? | Forum: Carrara
Thanks. Glad to see that MPs are a bit wonky. Err... or at least that other users agree they are, too. I did a search on the message board and I see this topic has bitten others. I solved my problem a bit differently. I created a helper object that provided the movement/translation (not rotation). I made the camera track the motion of this object - but not the rotation. Then I went back and keyframed the rotation of the camera. I may try a "Point At" helper and see how things go that way. The issue appears to be rotation in Motion Paths. I tried doing some rotation on my target object and it went all wacko, too. It would race to the end of the MP and then go through the rotation. It could be as you say that I was not doing some adjustments related to the MP at frame 1 and this caused unexpected side effects. It still seems broke to me, though. - Jasen.
Thread: Gonna be on TV! Tips, please. | Forum: Carrara
Wasn't expecting an English lesson. I'll just submit this link in reply. I'm not certain what verse(s) the title comes from, but I'm going to guess some of the Psalms were in mind. The only glitch I see textually is that the "Oh" should be "O".
And thanks for the advice about pixel sizes and such. I'll check with our head media guy and see what he says. I have the feeling he's more in the thankful for anything mode than worrying about the nit-picky "professional" little details. I'd like to raise his level of expectation and knew the community could help me out.

Thread: Custom Leaf photo/UV map tutorial. | Forum: Carrara
Interesting. I've used almost the same technique in a project I'm working on; except I used the spline modeler rather than the vertex modeler. My technique: Use Photoshop's selection tools (magic wand, etc.) to outline your object. Convert the selection to a path. Clean up the path in Photoshop as desired. Export path as an Illustrator file. In Carrara, import the Illustrator path into the spline modeler. Use flat mapping to apply the original image as a texture map. Go to the transform tab and scale and move the texture map around as needed. I'm going to guess that your technique is more flexible. The UV Editor probably lets you morph the texture map more flexibly, and it is likely easier to make certain types of changes to the object. - Jasen.

Check this thread. I was working on some smoke for a cannon. The technique may be useful for you. - Jasen.Thread: Carrara OSX Intel version? | Forum: Carrara
I'm very likely to buy one of the new iMacs - maybe even before MacWorld is over. Definitely migrating this year. Of course, I'm moving up from a B&W G3/350 with a G4/800 accelerator so even with Rosetta I'm expecting to see a BIG improvement. Has anyone run C5 under Rosetta? - Jasen.

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a005e'
Invalid use of Null: 'replace'
/forms_asp/inc/mail.asp, line 58
I was able to produce the above error by entering a random email address on the "forgot password" page. I doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen. And I'm pretty sure thats coming from the server, not the browser.
Look at the
tag of the update readme. It says "Carrara 4.1 Update". Probably displayed in the title bar at the top of your browser window.I know, I'm probably being pedantic, but that's what I get paid to do. The website probably really isn't a house of cards, but I hit several errors when I tried to get the download and it irked me. I'm feeling calmer now. B^)
Thread: C5 update posted | Forum: Carrara
Ugh! Would it be wrong of me to post a direct link to the downloads? Eovia's website SUCKS. It's pretty enough, but I got at least two raw VB errors while trying to jump through the hoops to access the download. And the title of the 5.02 readme page is "Carrara 4.1 Update".
And if you enter an invalid license key, how about a "Sorry, that's not a valid key" message.
Sorry, but as one who does a fair bit of web development, little things like that really bug me.
Thanks for the pointer, Mark.
Oh, and I hope this fixes the crashing problems I've been having in the shader room under OS X.

The Blender is a curve filter on a Radial Gradient. A couple control points in the Filter control how much of the shader is which color. Copy the color channel to the Transparency channel with the colors reversed. If you wanted to get tricky, make the Blender a Reference Shader so you'd only haveto mess with it in one place to affect both the color and transparency channels. - Jasen.

I posted the scene file to my web space. Do a "Save as..." of the file to your local machine. - Jasen.Message edited on: 12/18/2005 21:20
