All points covered--
-I graduated in '73.
-I chose pastels for my fractals to irritate a fellow fractalist who stated a dislike for pastels in fractels. It's part personal joke, and part personal preference, since I DO like pastels. (But don't tell him...)
-We all prefer what we prefer when it comes to things literary and artistic. That is not to say one form is inferior or superior to the other-- I understand personal preference well. We are who we are.
-Thanks for the turnon to mathsong.com. It's a great place with a lot of unique artistic works. It will take days to browse it all!

Thought I'd post one here, just to whet your appetite...
"Lightning Bugs"
Warm springtime dusk-- Just right
for barefoot-running through
the back-yard grass so cool
and tickly; fresh and nice--
The flashes happen suddenly,
hidden at the corner of an
unsuspecting eye--
Now stop! Stand still;
don't breathe or blink,
for they may see and fly,
unseen, away!
Now over there! Up in the trees!
As night sneaks up to cool the breeze;
a Flash! and Flash!
Before you know you're darting
here and there across
the night-dark grassy lawn,
hands snatching at
a million zillion flecks
of winking yellow light--
You reach, and catch!
Your Mason jar is full
of blinking midnight
magic-lantern fire!
So, giggling, off you go to bed--
You keep your jar safe by your head--
You drowse to sleep, and smiling, dream
of whirring through the night on wings of
sprinkly, starry, winking, twinkly light.

As a beginning fractalist, it's up to you to sample the wares, and make a software decision on what seems best and most fun for YOU. Don't fall into the trap of locking yourself into a single program based on what a few people might think is "BEST". Artists are by tradition open-minded experiment junkies. I hope you are too.
With that in mind, here is a link to a page that lists a whole lot of freeware/shareware/commercial fractal software. I hope you check at least a few of them out before deciding which style or technique you personally prefer.

Have fun!
Thread: Did you ever express your emotions in a fractal? | Forum: Fractals
Although I've never specifically created a fractal with 'emotional intent', I HAVE had people tell me certain of my works has evoked emotional responses in them. One person told me the combination of colors used in one of my FraxPlorer images recalled childhood memories for her that she had not thought of in years. I'd personally classify that as an artistic success, if not a deliberately emotional one. And so it goes.

Whatever it is that AristaProductionLab is using for midnight munchies, I WANT some. I'll be up until 3am waiting.... ;-)

Go to the provided link and make your selection. Some of the better-known programmes (not all may be listed on the web site) are Ultra Fractl (shareware), Sterling Ware, TieraZon, Mind Boggling Fractals, XenoDream (payware), and Kai's Power Tools FraxFlame/Plorer/4D (Photoshop-compatible graphics editor payware plugins). And let's not forget Fractint, which is a DOS program, but runs well in all the Windows flavors up to XP, if you get the latest developer's version from their website. It's freeware, and probably the best (and first) good fractal generator available.Thread: Where do you post your fractals? 2D or Fractal gallery? And why? | Forum: Fractals
Thank you. Yes, I'm healed, but since this was the second one on the same leg in 5 years, there's residual pain to deal with that will be there for quite a while. Otherwise, I'm fine!

FYI-- For fractal newcomers, here is a link to a database listing of most of the available-for-download fractal generators. This will give everyone a chance to truly explore fractals in all their glory, and keep the artform fresh. An aside-- I was somewhat under the influence of pain pills last night (I recently had a total knee replacement) and I admit I misinterpreted a comment directed to me. I apologize if I sounded harsh, as it was not my intention.Thread: Where do you post your fractals? 2D or Fractal gallery? And why? | Forum: Fractals
No, it's not an issue of duration-- I've never discussed it here (or anywhere I can recall). With me, it's a MEMORY issue-- over six years worth of fractals all in one directory, and no memory of having created them other than which program was used. I'm a lousy record-keeper, and the reason I carry a driver's license is not to identify myself to others, but so I can look at it to remember my own name. Ain't middle age grand! ;-)

I rarely use UF anymore-- I switch regularly to different programs just to keep my fractals from getting that 'manufactured' look. Most UF images I've posted here are several years old, and were probably made while I was learning the program, so your statement might be basically correct in some instances. I've tried not to use other's work as my own. Still, I defy anyone here to say they've not done the same at some point in the learning process. And if you send me a specific list of fractals I've posted that offends you, I'll gladly delete them from the Renderosity gallery.

A fractal is a fractal, whether post-processed or not, so mine always go into the fractal gallery. I'm a firm believer that using Photoshop, etc., to enhance an image only changes it from a fractal to fractal ART. Besides, everyone gets a chance to see what's posted, as they are available in the new posts gallery.
Using a fractal in Bryce, etc. as a texture map may be a different story, as the fractal is a component of a larger work and not the focus of it. But to my mind, that's not 'post-processing'.

I do my best work after midnight-- I sit with the lights off, the tv in the background with no sound, listening to (mostly) Tangerine Dream with headphones, and my cat is usually sitting in front of my monitor either wanting to be fed or petted.
So the common elements that may be emerging are:
--Semi-lit environment
--Evening or night
--Music (with headphones)
--Solitude

I usually post a brief tech description, and in some cases a description of what is in my mind when I view certain works. The comments, when posted, do tend to bear my own observations out, but I don't think that's either here nor there. I'm not the least bit taken aback when a comment runs contrary to my own opinion. I value freedom of thought and opinion above all else in this world, and it's vital to exercise the process.
I've often thought that if a psychologist were to visit my web galleries and treat them as a Rorschach test, the men in the white coats would be paying a visit to me fairly quickly. (And the thought of spending some quality time in a padded cell somehow appeals to me!)
It all comes down to personality...
