Subject: Any long term bad effects from using the Camera Library for poses?

classic ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 9:07 PM · edited Fri, 02 August 2024 at 6:09 PM

To unclutter my Pose library, I was planning on moving a lot of the my poses to the Camera library (after first renaming them with a "cm2" extension.

Any long term bad effects from doing this?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 9:27 PM

Not AFAIK. You can also use the Hands library. Alternatively, you can do what I just did and buy PBooost. It is worth it, and no I'm not being paid or otherwise rewarded for recommending it. It's a f***ing awesome utility, believe me.

I agree with SamTherapy, PBooost is a great way to get organized. I also have several Mat pose files in the camera library and haven't seen any ill effects.

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

classic ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 10:06 PM

I was thinking about that. It sounds like a good program because everyone always speaks very highly of it in this forum. My concern was that Pbooost would be adding a lot of specially named folders to my Poser Runtime. That's more stuff I will have to dig through when I am poking around in Windows Explorer editing files. The simpler my Runtime tree is the better.

tasquah ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 10:23 PM

Not really classic. You can have say a victoria 2 or victoria 3 folder on all libraries ( camera,figure,face,props...) . Or say buldings only and so forth. You can esily change directories while poser is still up and running. This means better orginization all the way around . You can break it down to find things easyer in both poser and exploring. Its really a great program if you dont have poser 5. On top of that even though you can move mats or what not to the camera / hand / face .. folder you cant resave something there so you are back to saveing and renameing and moving ....

Spit ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 11:29 PM

The only problem with putting pose/mat files in Cameras is that Cameras fills up too. :)

igohigh ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 11:50 PM

I've been using the Camera library for poses for quit some time now. Aside from crossed-eyes and a slight tail growing out my rear....naw, no long term bad effects that I can see. BTJMO!

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 4:22 AM

lol @ igohigh :) I'm with Sam on this buy PBooost & you never have to worry about having too many files.

artbyphil ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 7:42 AM

Hi I run win xp on fat 32 (cause ive got some old programmes that dont like seem to lke ntfs!) I've heard pboost won't let you change things while poser is open with this set up. Is there a fix for this cheers

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 8:20 AM

Bought pboost, can't use it so no there is no fix for it. Thought I was going to be patient enough to set up everything before going in but that didn't work and don't want to use ntfs so that didn't work...lol Just considered it money lost and moved on. I'm sure it's a great program for people not using win2k. Marque

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 8:41 AM

Could you use one of the partitioning applications to create a separate NTFS partition for Poser+PBoost, while keeping the rest FAT32 for your older apps?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 8:44 AM

PBoost should work fine on all Win versions, AFAIK. I bought it last week after reading about the updates (I'd been considering it for some time). Library locking problems can be dealt with quite easily. First, run Correct Reference, available here in Freestuff. It will correct texture file paths and allow you to manually correct ones which it can't deal with. Once you have that sorted, you should be able to run it just fine. I'm using XP home, which is, I believe just a prettied up version of Win2k. There are some good tutorials on Hog's own site, for dealing with any issues with PBooost.

I was never told about any updates. Where did you get them? The only way I would do it is to use a different drive for the ntfs, I have too much even for a 60 gig drive to split it up. Thanks for the info Sam, if you could point me to the update I would be most grateful. Thanks, Marque

maclean ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 10:37 AM

There's only one difference between Pose and Cameras for MAT files. Cameras has a silly little square artifact on every library pic. It looks like some idiot's idea of a framing gizmo from a camera viewfinder. So all the MATs in Cameras will have this stupid square on the thumbnails. Other than that, never had a problem. mac

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 10:56 AM

Marque fire off an email to hogwarden & ask about an update, he's not an ogre :) I've exchanged quite a few emails with him since I bought PBooost. XP Home with NTFS can suffer at times from the Library locking but it's caused by Poser itself & easily fixed with CorrectReference.

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:05 AM

I never said he was an ogre..lol He said it wouldn't work and even gave a test copy to see if it would work on your system before you bought it. It was no one's fault but my own that I bought it, just thought I could make it work a little easier than it did. I need to get the correct reference though I think that will be a good util to have. And I will ask him about the update, thought we got that kind of news in email, get enough of them telling me about new products...lol Phil, hope I can learn from one of the best, only have Truespace 4.0 but I'm getting the update for that now, just can't afford 5 yet. Thanks, Marque

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:08 AM

Ok, so I just use the camera or hand ext and move the folders to the camera and hand subdirs? Thanks, Marque

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:14 AM

lol I bet his ears are burning right now :) I suppose I shouldn't really tell people to email him as he's got enough to do with trying to finish v1.4. Actually I think CorrectReference might really help with your machine, mine started off with the locked folders until I got CorrectReference, now I'm happily locked folder free :)

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:21 AM

Are there any utilities out there to rename all the cr2's to cm2's at the same time, like a batch? Thanks for the info c1rcle. Is he going to offer the 1.4 for free as an update? Marque

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:22 AM

Oh and do you have win2k pro c1rcle? Thanks, Marque

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:28 AM

oops no I don't I have XP Home but CR still might help you (worth a try), as far as I know Howard is offering all updates as free.

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:30 AM

Ok, how do you go about renaming the pz2 files to cm2? Thanks, going for another I.V. of coffee Marque

umm I've read that p3do explorer can do that but I'm not 100% about it, also I just found a nice looking little program that does the same, it's called Batch Rename, I'm downloading it now to try it out myself :)

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:42 AM

I've just noticed they have another program called image convertor that might come in handy too if it supports bum files.

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:48 AM

Phil, is there a way to get an update for Truespace 4? Can't find any downloads for it on the Caligari site and don't want to pay them to find out there isn't one. 8^) Thanks, Marque

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:49 AM

Oh, and ran that Correct Reference and it shows no problems with my textures. Unless I'm doing something wrong anyway. Marque

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 11:57 AM

c1rcle that batchrename proggy is great!!! Thanks for the tip. Have an email into Hogwarden abot the pboost. Marque

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 12:02 PM

Just remember to put .cm2, must have done it wrong because it didn't do that on it's own. But I'm probably going to be buying this one. Marque

OpticalSingenoid ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 12:12 PM

Marque, try P3do by Yarp(FreeStuff). P3do's latest version(1.6 i think) works great with renaming folders at once! Just make sure you use the "Extension" filter. PBoost doesn't work for me either(WIn2K Pro). And i don't use NTFS because of my Encrypting program i use. Marco

Here's the Proper Sttings for P3do's Renamer!

Make sure you use a Wildcard like "*", this will say to the utility to look for any ****.pz2 file in the folder...

Hope this Helps!

Spit ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 2:24 PM

Maclean? I don't get any squares of anything in my thumbnails in Cameras. They look identical to the thumbnails in any other library. Correct Reference is the solution to stop Poser from locking libraries, yes, but I've had other locking problems with PBoost on WinXP Home with NTFS with Poser CLOSED. Sometimes I can't switch banks at all so had to stop using it. I run CR on everything in Poser but, as I said, even with Poser not running sometimes I couldn't switch banks.

tasquah ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 2:36 PM

Spit , sometimes the problum is casued from the way your folders are set up . What i mean is if you browse to the folder do you see thumbnails or detail view. Thumbnail view will lock it up . Changeing it to details helps fix it .

maclean ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 3:07 PM

Spit, My computer was made in La-Laland, which is why it's different from everyone else's. Do you get a full, square thumbnail or just the stupid circle with transparent background? It's something to do with the number of colors on your monitor. Poser gives you one or the other. If you get the other (square thumbs), then you should have the little camera squares too. I don't have poser on this computer, so I can't show you, but I used to color-code my library thumbs, then discovered that not everyone else saw them that way. Another of the many mysterious aspects of poser. mac

Spit ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 3:35 PM

Maclean..Oh, yes, now I see what you mean. You're right, I see the little corners. Poser puts that there but you only see it if the thumb has a non-white background. Tasquah..Thumbnail view can cause problems, yes, but only if you're fast and loose with deleting thumbnail.dat or don't give enough time for the thumbnail.dat to generate when there are changes and sometimes P3DO and such will put a lock on a directory if you've left that one as the last one used in the program. But I've run into the locks in PBoost even if I haven't opened Explorer to that folder. Sigh. But nothing will make me give up thumbnail view.
