THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Okay, this is the situation: I'm working on an ambitious project to build my local castle in Bryce 5, as close to stone-by-stone as I can. The best way of creating suitable building stones is in the terrain editor, in the traditional manner, i.e. create a mesh, go onto the editor, delete the mesh and create a new cube mesh, invert it so I can see what I'm doing, and get cutting and trimming until it's suitably "bricky". This is where I hit the problem. Along the top side of the box where the actually cutting and fashioning is done, there's a tiny little strip of mesh that I just can't get rid of. It won't cut and it won't erase and the end result is that I have two meshes side by side - one I need and one that's just in the way. I can create a negative boolean and blank out the unneeded part of the mesh that way, but with several hundred stones in this building that'll end up eating the memory and slowing things right down. I've attached a pic of the problem mesh in rendered form to hopefully clarify the problem. So, two questions: 1 - Does anyone know what I'm talking about here? 2 - What's the best way to fix the problem? Thanks.

You cannot get rid of it, it's a bug. Download and install the Bryce 5.01 patch and that will fix the problem.

Thanks. I'll get right on it :)

You can also try to make a whole wall using a terrain. You can even build a piece of wall stone by stone and lay it on the groundplane (the side of the wall that will be visible pointing at the sky) and make an altitude render from the top-view. Use this altitude render as displacementmap on the terrain and you'll have a whole wall made from one terrain. It'll save you lot's of memory and polygons.

uh..what about copy and paste? works for me..I use a 'guppy' method; copy one, make 2, grab 2, copy, make 4, etc., as needed. To be honest, there's some good textures out there that will make good castle walls, the trick is to establish a sense of scale proportional to how far away it is..the 'Installed' textures don't work all that well, I use one called 'brique', which, according to my database, doesn't have a URL..dangit. But look around, and that may help out. Castles are fun, I've made a couple..hope yours goes well too. take care.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I've installed the 5.01 patch now and that's sorted out the problem. As for the castle, at the moment I've got the foundations/floorplan built, as well as parts of the turrets and the roof. Just need the bit in the middle now. Any good building stone textures would be welcome, though :o)

Another benefit to the patch that you have installed is for trees. Next time you want to put a tree into a scene hold down the Alt key while clicking on the tree icon in the create pallette. A list of ready made trees will appear that are way better than the ones you will will find in the tree lab. For stone textures check out the following links. http://www.lemog.fr.st/ http://www.imageafter.com/index.php http://art.net/~jeremy/photo/public_texture/

Just a suggestion, Anything you are not going to see, you don't have to create. like the back and meeting edges of stones. Just a tip from to avoid that," Why is my house 2.4GB" feeling;0

Thanks for all the help, suggestions and especially links! Looks like I'm going to be busy with this for the forseeable future. I've attached a pic of the work-in-progress - luckily Stafford Castle was never much more than a baronial keep, so it was quite small and difficult to defend. It was basically lots of octagonal towers and not much else. I've done the roofs and foundations and I'm doing the windows at the moment. When it's done I'll post it in the gallery :o)
