THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: What would really be needed in Bryce 6 if there ever was one ...

People posting wish lists usually ask for stacks of new features. Me, I would like the existing functionality to work a bit better. Here's a thing that irks me, and this month's challenge brings the problem to the fore. Here's a simple scene. Sorry it's so boring and trite, but I just threw it together in a few minutes for the purposes of this demonstration. Now, this has just got the default sky, which is a bit boring. Now, suppose we go to the sky presets and look for a nice one ... (continued)

... "Tropic Isle" looks nice. I apply it, and I expect the result to look like this. However, this is not actually what I get at all, and the image above is a composite put together in Photoshop. (continued)

What I actually get is this, which is terrible. The sky is fine, but what's that huge blue fog doing in front of the hills? If I start hacking around in skylab to lose the fog, then I lose the pretty sky setting as well. IMO the sky modelling in Bryce really needs some work to stop this sort of thing.

Rochr ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 7:30 AM

Its true that some sky presets looks very odd when applied, but for something like this, you could easily add a 2D image in the back to achieve a nice sky. One of the strongest points, i think, in Bryce, is that it contains the ability to create sky/fog/haze. In most high end apps, that requires a plugin, that costs muchos dineros. Unfortunatly we probably wont get a number 6. ):(

I can live with the sky. I want a faster renderer, wich supports GI, Subsurface scattering, Radiosity and caustics. HDRI support would be nice too. That's about all I'd ask if I had to go for just one improvement.

Same as Rayraz here. A simplistic box modeling or spline modeling system would be cool too. Sometimes prims just don't cut it.

Phantast ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 12:51 PM

I don't think adding a 2D background should be necessary. Sort of makes the skylab irrelevant, doesn't it? Haze is good, but (a) it should be possible to operate on the sky without affecting the scene overmuch, and (b) the haze should be scalable. If you import a human figure at the basic Bryce default of height=40.96, and then add a house scaled to match the figure, even with haze at a very low setting the far end of the house will be showing colour change. It would be very nice if you could say, "Right! 40 units = 2m" and Bryce would then scale all atmospheric effect appropriately. Even better, add a tree, type in scale height of 6m, and Bryce would scale the tree accordingly to the global scale that you had defined.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 1:17 PM

Everything above, also no more bugs in the DTE, where it crashes if you play about with too many settings. Catlin

Rayraz ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 1:49 PM

Wouldn't it be cool if you could write your own mathematical functions to blend different effects such as haze with the scene? Right now haze get's more visible as you go further away from the camera in a lineair fashion, but what if you could make it squared? You could even use functions with more then one dimension. 3 dimensional fog algorithms could be used to create volume mist effects just like you would do with objects with volumetric textures now, but then at the scale of a whole scene instead of one object. If you could make a 4 dimensional function you could even use it to make volume clouds that actually make this billowing transformation over time as we can see in the real world. That would be like taking the basic principle of bryce's inner workings to the next level and beyond. Just imagine the possibilities!

Maybe I'm way off with what your saying, Phantast, but you sort of can scale the haze if you go into the Skylab. From the main screen you can only control the thickness, I think, (maybe it's the density) but in the Skylab you have 3 settings, thickness, density, and height to give you a little more control over haze. You don't have a ratio, but it does give you something to work with.

Sackrat, you can do that with bryce lightning. Just give both server and client the IP of the dual processor system and you should be able to use both processors.

Support for Mac OS X, preferably optimized for 10.3. All of my Corel purchases are on hold, until I see a Mac port Bryce 6.

IMO Bryce's Sky generator works great ( although all things can use improvement ). The Tropical Isle preset is set-up to pull the color from the haze & fog. To change it with no haze or fog, simple drop the haze & fog to 0, then put the color back in using the Custom Sky color palette. No need to even go into the Sky Lab. As for what I would like to see in B6, is for the word Corel not to be present anywhere on the box or software.

How about the word Pandromeda? That would be cool.

(grins) Aye, but nobody cares about Bryce 6 anymore. We've decided to skip ahead to Bryce 9, remember? (grins) The Advanced Creature Lab. The Deep Molecule Editor. And of course, the Laser Lab. (smirks) Phantast, I understand where you are coming from on this one, but the sky presets, like all Bryce presets, were just made to give us ideas and tutorials on where to go. Don't give up on the sky lab, it's wonderful in all of it's forms.... Just keep tweaking and you will eventually get the desired results...! If you want to see some skylab magic, check back in a day or two, we'll start a new forum where we can all slay down our Sky Lab blues!

The ability to form real life objects of what we render. Wait, maybe not. Then, every teen Brycer would have to explain why there's a naked Vicky in his room.

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 September 2003 at 2:01 AM

Lol @ the naked Vicky. I wouldn't really mind having a naked woman standing in my room. Think of the possibilities :)*) I'm not sure if my parents would like it though... If you make the real life objects inflatable you can hide them easier if that should be neccesary :) I think female brycers would prefer a naked Mike btw.

Are there female teen Brycers?

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 September 2003 at 2:56 AM

dunno. But there almost must be at least a few.

ROFL@Rayraz&Jason.....................8D You guys need to be smacked and put to bed without your supper.................then again maybe not you might like it lol 8D Catlin

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 September 2003 at 9:30 AM

No, no, no... Not without supper, with a couple of baby pidgeons making noise so we can't sleep and end up making inflatable clothes for our naked inflatable Vicky's just to keep us from getting bored :)

ROFLMAO, I may not be a teen Brycer but I wouldn't mind a naked Mike in my room! LOL, but then I may have to explain that to my teen daughter.

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 September 2003 at 9:45 AM

I bet she'd want one too :P
