Subject: Putting Hair On Vikings

ghoyle1 ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 7:46 AM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 12:18 PM

Howdy, folks, I've been a Poser user for about a year now (recently upgrading to Poser5, Sr 3), and have dabbled a bit in the fantasy genre, but now I've run into a problem which stumps me. I bought the DAZ3d Viking pack to produce some doughty barbarian hordes, but I'm a bit stumped when it comes to putting hair and helmets together. The hair wants to stick out through the helmet instead of under it (I'm using the Morphing Fantasy Beard & Hair for Michael here, which was used in the Daz3d renders). Does anybody have any suggestions about how to achieve this effect? I'm assuming transparency maps are involved here, which I've only recently started trying to use, but I'm a bit confused about trying to use them with hair. Thanks in advance, Guy Hoyle

Here is one solution, I grew Poser 5 hair off the underside of the hat brim.

Sometimes adjusting the z scale of the headgear works for me. But that probably won't help with the fantasy beard: that hair is too bushy. I don't think transmaps are the answer unless there's a clearly marked zone for the top of the head. But I could be wrong. And dynamic hair would do it, like PhilC's example. But if you want "hordes" I doubt you can use it...it would probably choke your machine.

Hmm, not a bad idea; I'll have to give it a try. But what to do when the hat comes off? The two styles should look compatible, I guess. Thanks for responding so quickly! Guy

I usually use magnets for this : I pose the hair as usual, and make it shrink under the helmet with a magnet or two.

Are you talking about this Daz Viking set? Anton's Fantasy Beard has morphs for HatHair as well as the sides and such. And of course, magnets, but I'm only beginning to learn them after 2 years of Posering.

Hey, how do I put a picture in a message like that?

ghoyle1 ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 12:26 PM

I've found the Hat Hair morph, but it doesn't quite solve the problems I'm having; the hair still doesn't come out from under the helmet mnaturally (though it does n't grow out of the top anymore). I guess I'm going to have to learn about magnets, myself. The picture lhiannan posted above is what I'm aiming for, pretty much, but I don't know how that effect was achieved. Guy

That's a pretty good Viking image - chain-mail, axe and banded helmet. I read somewhere that Wagner made up the deal with the horned helmets, then people started associating them with Vikings.

Never thought about it, but now that you mention it, the horns would actually be truly silly in real combat. "Say Olaf -what say we give our opponents a convenient lever on the side of our heads!"

Does anybody have any advice on the use of magnets, or know of some helpful tutorials on their use? I'm having a hard time finding some usable tutorials. Thanks in advance, Guy (plucking out his own hair)

Morphworld 3.0. What Traveler doesn't know about magnets never happened. I posted a reply before and it disappeared... hmm... in a nutshell... To attach file (pic, animated gif, tex file, ect), use the Attach File bar under the text box (what ya type in to reply here) and hit Browse to locate said file. In my pic in the thread way up above, I only used the Beard's own morphs, no magnets, no custom morphs.

OK, here's what I get. The hair is too "puffy"; using the hair's own morphs, I can't get it to lie very close to the head.

here's a side view:

Use the bodyhandles on the side of the head (lhair, rhair, I believe) and Pivot them around, as well as make use of the Swell morph in negative #'s (you'll need to puff the beard back up with morph and fiddle with the mustache.) With any posing, it's a lot of dial turning and experimenting.

ghoyle1 ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 2:40 PM

Yeah, already I can see I'm in for a lot of experimentation here. Wish that there had been some kind of provision for hair made in the Viking pak. Thanks for the help, Guy

ghoyle1, there is another option. I use it in some of my promo renders as well. I used the hair in the Celtic warrior pack from Daz that is in fact an extension under the helmet and I also used the Anton hair-beard and turn the hair invisible. The Celtic hair itself have a bunch of morphs and colours that come very handy. :)

With regard to "Horns" on helmets...there ARE some helmets with horns still existing..but they are from the Bronze Age in Europe. About 2000 years BEFORE the viking period. Thet were dicscoverd arounf the time folks statred taking an interest in past history and folks got the idea they were viking. The ones they found were thin bronze, relatively undamaged..so the theory is they were just ceremonial "status" symbols. They weren't 'practical' fighting helmets. You get a good downwards blow on the horns..and unless they were very loosely attached..the leverage would probably break your neck as some-one ponted out

Thanks, Jon, I have the Celtic warrior pack and will try that out as well. I like the pack very much, by the way! Guy
