Subject: Premature re-wind?

Misha883 ( ) posted Sun, 07 September 2003 at 10:10 PM ยท edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 1:55 PM

I was shooting today, and I think I did not get too carried away, but somewhere halfway finished with a roll of 36, the camera decided to re-wind on its own. [Canon 1n]. I had this happen once before with an older Canon 650 when the battery was getting low. The battery check button checks out OK, but the battery is about 7 months old and I've been putting a fair number of rolls through it. I will replace the battery in any case before taking a short vacation on Wednesday. But have any of you Canon users seen a similar problem?

Not to sound...I don't know...but I have a lot of customers come in with this problem too - I work at the Wal-Mart Photolab. Questions I ask are: Did you drop the camera? Did it get wet? Are the batteries new? How old is it? Is it used often? lol!!! Most of the time they tell me they dropped the camera. Or cause the battery is dead.- Maybe it's the type of battery you are using? If we can't solve the problem we tell them to take it to a special camera shop to get it looked at...it might be a wireing issue or something? I have no clue! I hope I helped. I try to help the customers as much as I can...sometimes I have to ask the one's that have been there longer because they know more about cameras then I do. Anywho, I hope I helped. Johannah

Thanks Johanna. You are right about that check list. Usually it is the simple things. [Last time, with the Canon 650, a new battery didn't help, but the contacts needed to be cleaned.] I'm guessing it's a similar thing here.

I hope it doesn't cost you a whole lot to get it cleaned... Johannah

Misha - The only thing I could think of that makes sense is the battery. The 1N is built like a freaking tank with fantastic build quality, I can't think of anything else that would make it do that. If getting a new battery doesn't help, I'd look at getting the camera cleaned, but I wouldn't think that would be the problem with the sealing on the 1N. Tell you what, I'm your friend. I'll make the ultimate sacrafice, you send me your smelly old 1N and I'll send you my spiffy EOS 630. :D hehehe -=>Donald

I think it is most likely the battery, or the battery contacts. This may even have something to do with the autofocus problem I was having a couple weeks ago... Had a similar set of things happen with my ancient 650. Which is why, come to think about it, first caused me to look on e-Bay and see the really great deals one can find now on professional film equipment. Now, if only the long prime telephotos would come down...

agree to that! I have a telephoto...F=80-200MM plus a 2X lens added on, so tonight I can try to take a picture of the moon. I also found my very nice tripod- all of my equipment is my dads but he's letting me use it and be in my glory!

I've run several rolls through it now using a new battery. No problems. Happy to have no problems. Wish the low battery detector worked somewhat better... Thanks for the help!
