Subject: Newbie texture question for Mac

beonalert ( ) posted Mon, 22 December 2003 at 2:12 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 8:05 AM

Sorry for the newbie post, but here's the deal: I have poser 4 running on a Mac. I bought a 3rd party character (Jade to be specific) and I used Mac Converter for the files. Now I know that the image files need to be converted as well. Can I just convert them in Photoshop to a .pict file? I tried this and it doesn't seem to do the trick. When I go into the texture section of the Materials window, it recognizes the .jpg files but won't open them. I read on a tutorial that there should be an option to "convert" in this window, but I never get a prompt for this. Is there a preferred way to convert the .jpgs? Thanks in advance!

Are you saving them as a Photoshop file??? Be sure to render them fairly large: in new window specify the size and the resolution and then save them in Photoshop format. They should open in PS as a .psd file.

You shouldn't have to convert the images. Poser 4 on the mac reads jpg's perfectly fine. The conversion you read about probably refers to bump maps. They are usually distributed as jpg's instead of bum-files because the bum-files are huge and Poser will convert them for you. To convert do like this: open Poser. Don't load your character yet, but instead load a simple prop. The box will do fine. Open the material editor and in the bottom left corner you will see an option to load bump maps. Click on the button to navigate to the folder where you stored them. If you didn't turn off the option you'll even see a miniature version of the jpg. Load it and Poser will ask you if it should convert it for you. Let it do that. Repeat until you converted all. Unfortunately I can't show you a picture as I only have Poser 5 on my computer now. Hope this helps you.

I will try the bum-files process you suggested. I was only in the texture menu so that may be why the "convert" option never came up. As for the textures, when I hit "load" I see the Jade.jpgs listed in the list as well as the thumbnail but when I click open, nothing happens. The window dissappears and I am back to the Materials window and the texture is still listed as "no texture".

I must admit that I don't understand what is happening. Did you buy the Jade character by newherve here in the marketplace? If you did, do you have Victoria 2 or Victoria 3 (from www.daz3d.com)? Jade won't work without at least one of them. Sorry if the questions are too basic, but you said you are a newbie :-) I'm off to bed now, it's almost 11 pm here, and work is waiting tomorrow, but maybe somebody else can help you.

Thanks for asking! The answers to all your questions are..YES. I bought Jade here at Renderosity and used Mac converter (but I did not use Mac Installer). I have Victoria 3 as well as the head and body paks to go along with it. Get some sleep and if you think of anything, let me know. Thank you!

Look at the length of the names in the texture files. If any of them are longer than 31 characters, the Mac can't open them even if you see the first part of the name. The path to the files can't be longer than 64 characters. (OSX might be different.) So, if you have a texture which says "morningcloak_butterfly_tattoo_texture_for_mistymoistymorningfae_by_martysnookums.jpg" you'll just have to shorten it to something sensible. Carolly

I've had this same problem with some jpgs not loading into the material window. I don't know how they are being saved on the PC. If the jpg does not show up for me in JpegViewer or the material editor then I open it in Graphic Converter or Photoshop and save as jpg copy. This works for me.

Ooops! Don't know what I was thinking when I responded (above). My mind seems to be on hold this holiday season:-/ I hope the other responses helped you. May I ask why you didn't install them using Macinstaller? It allows you to input where you want the files installed. Also it's useful to keep a list of what you've installed and then go tracking it down to make sure it is in its proper place.

Well, I didn't use Mac Installer because my first purchase (Vic 3 by Daz) came with it's own installer and seemed to work fine. For the Jade character, however, the readme file said the only thing I had to do with the Mac was to convert the bumpmap files and everything should work. The icons in the !!Nherve menu appear just fine and all the files are in the proper directory but they just don't seem to be linking correctly. Perhaps I should retry installing Jade via the Mac Installer?

If I were you I'd give it a try! Jade, I believe is from Daz, too and I find that their installers work fine. The bumpmaps are a pain... but you can deal with them after everything else is installed. Once your character is loaded and before your MATS are added to the figure... you can go to the Materials Lab and load the textures and bumps from there. It's easier to convert the bumpmaps that way.

Just one quick suggestion - my mac did exactly the same thing (it would load Vik3 but not load any textures I tried) and it turned out that Poser's memory settings were too low, and therefore couldn't load the texture into memory and did that whole no-texture thing. It might be worth checking that.
