There will be no further SR's for P5. This was it. Att his point, everything else will have to wait for P6, which some very old statements has placed at early next year, but that's been slightly altered since. Despite the wonderful drill eating into my teeth, I'll say it's safe -- as safe as any update and certainly no more unsafe than SR3. That means standard precautions, of course -- back up, have CD's ready, and what not -- but not everything is fixed -- it's not a panacea for what ails ya. I will say that in my particular case, it has installed without any problems, and the impact of it is nigh on miraculous. It used to take me a good 30 seconds to load a default V3, and now it's down to like 5. To switch libraries could take 10 seconds, now it's all but instantaneous. I can have missing files, cancel, and keep going without having to restart the program -- and cancel during the shadow map rendering phase, as well. Oh yeah. I'm happy. Safe? well, Dustin never did figure it out...

I agree. Baseline Firefly renders are much, much quicker and some of the other "slowbies" such as finding P4 files are much quicker. Hey, I'm impressed. Nice job, CL. And since I don't have the slightest idea what a lot of the other topics based around SR4 are about, I'm reading them carefully trying to figure out these obscures bits and pieces in case I need them at a later date. I'd still like a nice "idiot frienly" tutorial on the Material room, however.
I'm working on it, Cedarwolf, slowly but surely, and Geep's got one here, too, and there's a decent one out there but I can't find the darn link to it -- I snagged it from PPros... Mine's going node by node and showing what they play with. It'll be pdf format, as well. I figure since I'm not the brightst bulb in the house, might as well give it a shot, lol

I reverted back to the SR 3 version of Poser 5 from an Imaged file of my hard drive after discovering SR 4 doubled the time it takes for Poser to launch. Waiting to see if there's a fix or workaround for that problem before re-installing SR4.
Intel Core I7 3090K 4.5 GhZ (overclocked) 12-meg cache CPU, 32 Gig DDR3 memory, GeoForce GTX680 2gig 256 Bit PCI Express 3.0 graphic card, 3 Western Difgital 7200 rpm 1 Tb SATA Hard Drives
I didn't notice the thing about the load time. I guess it partially depends on how much stuff is on the hard drive, and it's always taken what seems forever to load either P4 or P5 on my laptop. I still think we need something that we can point at a particular item such as a prop and have it find all the linked files and delet them in one swoop. I've got to much on the HD and need to get rid of about 5GB of stuff I don't use so I can replace it with new toys...heheh...
SR4 a Total waste...They didn't deal with the issue of dynamic hair. Even if you have all the collisions setting are ON dynamic hair will fly right through V3 during an animation. So I thought they'd fix that in SR4...Fat chance. I think they're holding out for poser 6 so they can charge us to fix bugs that should never have been there in the first place as Poser 4 doesn't have this problem. I'll tell you I'm about ready to pack it in on CL.
slightly unfair, ninasteel -- Poser 4 doesn't have collision at all (even faulty) and it doesn't have dynamic hair. I can't say SR4 is a total waste -- they fixed things that have haunted poser since version 3 (the file lookup issue, for one), and they did add several improvements to poser 5 as it is. I will agree that Dynamic hair collisions still need work -- that's an issue caused by the algorithms that determine collsions. And they do work in general -- the guide hairs themselves are affected by collisions in my work, it's the additioanl hairs that are not. Ok, yeah, it's the hairs other than the guide hairs that are important, I know, I know... But there is a lot more to Poser 5 than just those things...

Hmmm...I've been reading the discussions here on the new release and I just don't know about whether or not it's worth installing. I've downloaded it, I've got it ready to go, but I'm wondering if I should wait for SR4.2, the one that fixes the problems that were supposed to be fixed by SR4.0. I have to admit that I don't understand some of the threads but I'm smart enough to understand that with this many different probles it may not be ready yet. To quote Sir Lawrence Oliviet in that classic scene with Dustin Hoffman: "Is it safe??"
