Subject: File frustration.....

skee ( ) posted Tue, 20 April 2004 at 12:47 PM · edited Fri, 07 February 2025 at 6:42 AM

Is there any way to tell what clothes fit to what figure? I am not a very organized person and I have clothes scattered in so many differant folders that I can't tell what fits with what figure. My question is, Is there a way to look at a file in notepad or some other edititing program to see what go with what figure? I hope I have made myself clear as to what I am asking.I am not new to poser, but I have been bad about keeping all the read-me's in with the folders. It seems to me that some people don't say which figure the clothes are made for.
All help will be helpful. Thanks
skee

Unfortunately there's no standard way to determine which figure goes with which clothing. Sometimes you can look at the "figureResFile" line in the CR2.... the OBJ file may be in a folder with a meaningful name. But that isn't the usual case.

If it has buttocks it's probably a Millennium figure (Mike, Vicky, Steph, The Freak etc.), if it has an upper neck it's probably a first generation Millennium figure (M1/2, V1/2, S)

Thanks, It's just frustrating. I have been trying to fit them to each figure.

It would be nice if the original creators of Poser had set up some kind of "key" between clothing and figure, because clothing is so specific. But by now it's too late. Such a key might even be a problem now; it might prevent us from developing methods like the Tailor to adapt clothing to other figures.

Skee: if you are using P5, I hope that, once you find out which clothing fits which characters, you take a minute or two to move the clothing into a separate sub-folder for that character> (It'll save time in the future) I have, under the "Characters" folder, sub-folders for each of the different characters (P5 male, P5 female, V2, v3, m3 etc), and under each a "clothing" folder, where I put all the clothing that fits that character. If you are using P4/PP I dunno. Cheers, Diolma

Ockham, you are so right about that key. Diolma, I have poser5 and I am trying to do just that, it is really time intensive. Thanks for the help. skee

LOL Skee! Yes it is time intensive! But it's only a once-off, not every time, so you save time in the long run:-)) BTW - an aid is to keep a spreadsheet running at the same time as working with Poser. As you work out what fits where, enter the clothing-folder name and the character into the spreadsheet. Don't bother moving them yet. Once you have sorted out what goes where, exit Poser, sort the spreadsheet by character, print it out then use that as your guide to folder creating/moving. Cheers, Diolma

if it looks really cool, and is just what you need, it doesn't fit the figure you've got..at least that's the way it works for me..;)
Check the 'requirements' in Freestuff, and some folks are nice enough to say 'for V3', etc. Hmm..interesting idea, diloma..have a database, it's an easy thing to add another field, another query, and then sort out the 700-odd 'characters' I have..;) good luck.

This thread might help you. It is NEVER too late to get organized. The sooner you do it, the better, but it is never too late. You are probably downloading more stuff this very week and it will vanish into the morass. Get into the habit of relabeling each and every file you download. Whether it is storebought or freestuff, the file name will not have all the information you need. "jumpsuit-v2-joe" and "jumpsuittex-4joe-john" will be next to each other in your file lists. Keeping the textures with the clothing is even more important than keeping the clothing with the people. "eveningdress-s-mary" is going to fit a very different figure than "eveningdress-sp-sally" because stephanie and steph petite are only similar in name. "dress01" and "poserfreedress" aren't the least bit helpful as labels a year later! "Bertha" could be the name of a character, a skin texture, a dress, a hair model... or a very large gun. ;) "Bertha-cannon-smedly" would readily get filed under weapons and "bertha-hair-doright" goes pop into the hair folder... "bertha01" remains without a berth of any kind. Adding the maker's name at the end will allow you to sort by type of item: book, chair, carpet. Adding it at the beginning will allow you to sort by name if you want all of PhilC's stuff together or Traveler's or Anton's in a group no matter whether it is clothes or hair or magical props. In either case, adding the name will help if you wish to credit people in a gallery image or thank them once you realize that the outfit or prop is way cool. With Poser 5 and subfolders you can do a lot more indepth organizing, but I'd suggest starting with a corner and nibbling through your libraries. You don't want to get overwhelmed! Tackle a small area such as hair or animals or vehicles, complete it. As you move through each section, the mess in the middle will become less cluttered and far more manageable. Good luck! Carolly

I use a freeware program called P3D0 EXPLORER. The way to use it is using the folder Favourites, you can make this root: V3 | character1 | character2 | Pose Matposes Props Clothes | Mats Face By this way you can have organized all yours items, and you can find at any time what items are useful for your character.
