Subject: Need advice on PBooost

DayTimer ( ) posted Wed, 19 May 2004 at 3:20 AM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 3:02 AM

I am getting ready to upgrade my OS from Win98 to WinXp..I have been reading dome other posts and others have complained about folder lock in PBooost while Poser 4.03 is running. My machine has a FAT32 file system. Has this folder lock problem been fixed in the program so that you can switch pose folders while both programs are running..i.e. Poser/PBooost? I found at Hogwarden's site where converting to NTFS may solve the problem. I wanted to ask for advice before taking such a drastic step such as converting file systems. Thx DayTimer

I may be wrong but if you go XP I don't think you have a choice, I think you have to go NTFS. If I am I'm sure someone will chime in. I have XP Pro, and so far the only problem I've had is when I had to restore and PBoost forgot where I put stuff. I'm moving the files back manually and they all seem to be there with no problems. You're going to like XP a lot better than 98. 8^) Marque

Hi Actually you can install Win xp with fat 32,i had mine like that origionally as I was runing some old programmes and thought thats what they had to run on. After a recent reinstall though I've changed it to ntfs and everything still works ok. I've been very impressed with XP so far, much better than 98.

Halloa!

Glad you've got things fixed, Marque... :)

Yes, a FAT32 drive will remain FAT32 when you upgrade to XP.
I'd recommend that you try Poser and PBooost together with this setup first... some systems behave just like Win98 and never lock!

If you DO get locks then you can convert the drive to NTFS from windoze. The easiest way is to type 'convert' into the 'Help and support' search box... then follow the instructions on screen. It does take a leap of faith to hit the 'go' button... butas long as your power stays on, you'll be fine. LOL!

You'll definately notice the difference in speed and reliability of XP... even if it is a bain for programmers!

Attached Link: Is your compute ready for Windows XP?

Chances are you have an older computer if you are still running Windows 98. Too often the older computers are not able to handle Windows XP. You may want to evaluate your computer to be sure you're able to handle Windows XP. For your convenience, I've provided a link to the Microsoft site where you can evaluate your computer. If you're up to Windows XP, my advice is to backup any important data, then wipe your hard drive(s). Install Windows XP from scratch. Use NTFS from the beginning. You're always better off installing a new operating system from scratch because you won't carry along all the crud from the previous installation.

I installed mine from scratch even though I was running win2k pro. I haven't had any regrets so far moving to win xp pro. Marque

Older computers can handle xp just as well as the new ones. I run win xp pro on 233mgz pentium with 96 megs ram with no problems.(Other than the fact my second hard drive is dedicated to page file. Oh well )Anyway, pboost worked fine when I converted through win 98-me-2000-xp pro. I think it may just be luck of the draw though.

Yep... it seems like 60/40 : bad/good for XP Fat32 systems. Also... Re: FAT32 and XP upgrades: Whether Poser is then re-installed can have a further bearing on the matter. Some users have said that their working system has started locking after re-installing Poser, others have reported that re-installing Poser (just 'over the top' of the current installation... nothing is lost) has stopped Folder locks. Whether this is dependant upon the version of XP is unknown. IMPORTANT!!! Also to be remembered is Layingback's discovery... although still to be proved... that the code for loading compressed content in PP and P5 is not succeptable to the bug which locks the folders when uncompressed files are loaded. Hehe... try installing XP on a laptop with 4GB hard-drive. LOL! I'm sure it would run... but will it fit? H:))

Older computers may not be capable of handling Windows XP. Here are Microsoft's recommendations: Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional * PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended * 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features) * 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space* * Super VGA (800 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor * CD-ROM or DVD drive * Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
