Subject: poser 5 and poser 4 files??

Okay here is the senario....I had a computer crash down!! :( Anyway I have to reinstall alllll my poser stuff.....again!!!! Sooo What I am thinking is maybe I'll go to poser 5 now.

So as I got to thinking about reinstalling all my many files it dawned on me that they are set by path for poser 4, so the installs that go directly where they belong will they still go to their respective folders in poser 5 or would I end up doing it all manually??

Thanks ever so much for any help.

Installers from Daz should have no problems, just select the Poser 5 folder in the dialogue. Zip files should be okay as long as the path begins with "Runtime". If the path starts with "Poser 4" or "Metacreations" or somesuch, you'll need to extract to a temp directory and then grab the Runtime folder from there and copy it to your installation. If you still have your P4 folder structure intact, you can just copy the entire Runtime directory across, but I'm not sure from what you say if this survived the crash. Bad luck on that, hope you get it sorted soon.

Don't just copy stuff, it over writes important p5 files...just link to in in P5 If you are installing from scratch set up you're new runtimes Like if you have vicky give her own runtime like this: Vicky runtime Once you link to it in p5 it will create all the folders under runtime for you. Plus with p5 you can nest folders: figures daz people vicky clothes dresses etc... play with it and you can put the runtimes anywhere...I keep a few on cd to clear hard disk space, when I need them I just pop in the cd and then open the run time in p5

"Don't just copy stuff, it over writes important p5 files" Such as what? I've never had a problem copying runtimes from one to another.

If you copy on the geometries, Libraries, and Textures folders, you will be fine. Copying over your ui, plugins, IOplugins, and similar folders will overwrite the newer and updated P5 files, and make P5 useless and pretty much even more frustrating. P5 updated several core components in the folders outside of the content ones. So just takin the "runtime" folder and copying it over doesn't work for the upgrade to P5.

Thank you ynsaen The another reason is that it messes with the references...which slows down p5 Getting correct reference will help but it is a pain. When I got p5 it took me weeks to separate the runtime and get it all referenced correctly. But if you're starting over form scratch it is best to start setting up multiple runtimes right away. Organization from the beginning and all that.

Ah I got what you mean now... yes I was thinking just of the libraries, geom and tex. I agree, Tirjasdyn, it's much better to set up multiple runtimes in P5, especially if you have as much free stuff hoarded as me ^_^

You'll want to use CorrectReference to fix all the stuff that was changed. The free version does a decent job, but CorrectReference Pro covers many more, essential items.

Thank you all for your tips and ideas. I really do appreciate it alot. I also didn't realize poser 5 could carry runtimes for individuals like vicky and mike folders, wow wouldn't that be a great help. I do lose my free stuff lol especially when my pose files only go to 250!! lmao Bobbie Boucher, just had to say your name gives me a kick :) makes me want to ask you for a game of fuuzball! rof
