Subject: composite: Where's the matte shader???

How do you create a matte shader for receiving shadows in carrara? I tried to take a highway scene, and I want to put my logo sitting in one of the lanes. Obviously I need to create a shader that's see through, but will still receive shadows. any help would be great. thanks. Shaun

Carrara uses a little different scheme for that. Instead, you change the Lighting Model in the texture room. The object will now only show up when a shadow is cast on it and uses whatever colors and textures you designate in the shader. Usually, you simply color the object with a dark gray or black since that is what most shadows look like. But, for colored shadows you can use different colors. Kinda cool. Make sure to uncheck "Cast Shadows" for the object in the Assembly Room. Mark

Mark,

Very interesting, I never noticed that the built in Shadow Catcher would color the shadow using the sub shader. Hmmm, guess I have a little more work left on the GI Shadow Catcher...

Yes it does. Whatever the shader is on the object is what will show up. This is just a simple plane with a rough sandy colored orange texture that had to be matched to the image. -Kix
