Attached Link: Fragmented OBJ files

I discovered a very common problem to us all which could potentially affect mesh product render times for some Poser6 users.

It has to do with spam within the obj file format that can ghappien during the mapping/grouping process.

Regards,
Anton

Thanks. np. SOme people don't have this issue with firefly. Also not all obj files are fragmented. It can be a figure or a prop or an imported obj. Basically it is just about some people having a hang on the firefly calculation that reads the materials from the mesh on rendering. This particular issue has a very specific symptom being a long hang on the "adding objects" status bar. Using a script or utility for defragmenting the obj g/usemtl lines is really just another thing people should do during content creation, like adding a white backdrop to a texture, etc. It just gets added to the list of things to check for when building a product.

For the techno-ninnies like me, how would I know that the problem is fragmation? I read the explanation but for me, it doesn't mean much. I understand very little about how these things work. I am referring to products we already have. With any luck, merchants will be working on correcting that.

For me, the symtom is a very long hang when the "adding objects" status bar comes up. The bar should only appear briefly after the "adding textures" status bar. If you are encountering a long hang as described then it may be this issue.

You may not have any problems at all. It seems to be a firefly/hardware calculation or something so not everyone may run into this. But for some it can make a product a joy or a pain to work with. If you go to the thread and use Spanki's program to resave the obj(always make a backup), and the hang goes away, then contact the author so they are aware in making future items.

Np. I am just glad I ran into it on my system. Otherwise I would never been curious enough to dig into it.

question....is this an .obj specific problem? or can it affect .pp2/cr2 files with embedded geometry?

Andi3d, I am not sure. For some reason I don't think it would do it with embedded geometries. I am not sure though.

"question....is this an .obj specific problem? or can it affect .pp2/cr2 files with embedded geometry?" I also don't know, but suspect the oposite of Anton ;). Another reason not to use embedded geometries.
