as well as I think :)
The lower the shadow ambience, the less intense the shadow will get.
The softer the shadow. the blurrier the edges of the shadow get.

I'll try that tomorrow, I'm doing a render of it so far and it's taking forever.

As far as I can tell, every piece of the castle with that material was set to not receive shadows, so you might want to check all the surrounding floor pieces. (cube4_Walls_2, cube4_ArchCorridor_1, cube4_ArchLinning_1, cube4_copy6_ArchInner_1, cube53_Doorstep_1)
About the lights, I'm not sure what the difference is, but you have Shadow Ambience set to Black at 100%. The default is white at 0%, I can't see any difference in the rendering but, I think a setting at 100% will probably slow the render down. You might try changing it back to white at 0%.
And, I think the torches are to bright now, I'd turn the intensity back down to 8 or 10.
You did delete the negative radial and the spotlight right? OK.
Last, you have the torch lights useing a gel, turn that off. The gel you have set is an even coloring and isn't doing anything other than slowing down the render.
Just my opinion. Looks great by the way. :)

xenic, "As far as I can tell, every piece of the castle with that material was set to not receive shadows," Probably not just with that material. I just didn't know you needed to check that in the list - a month ago I didn't even know the list existed! "so you might want to check all the surrounding floor pieces. (cube4_Walls_2, cube4_ArchCorridor_1, cube4_ArchLinning_1, cube4_copy6_ArchInner_1, cube53_Doorstep_1)" Yup, done that. "About the lights, I'm not sure what the difference is, but you have Shadow Ambience set to Black at 100%. Er... no, I just turned them to 0... okay I'll delete them. "Last, you have the torch lights useing a gel, turn that off. "(Bryce on)~~~~~only the area around the dog was rendered all the way, don't freak out.~~~~~" Why would I freak out? I'm just so greatful for the help. I wouldn't have sent you the file otherwise. (glad it finally arrived okay - beastly hotmail!) Fran - OnTheEdge of happiness and off to play some more

Does 5.5 get rid of the light gel bug? (wondering if these hours and hours of downloading is going to mean anything practial)

"Receive shadows", you don't need to check it most the time, the default is for it to be turned on. Looks like that Material just had it turned off when you applied it to the parts. I'll be darned, I forgot about the light gel thing. But thinking real quick about it, I can see how it makes a kind of sense, from a mechanics of rendering, point of view.
