Subject: Hot 20....NO complaint, possible solution

Kristta ( ) posted Tue, 03 May 2005 at 10:09 PM · edited Sat, 28 December 2024 at 2:40 AM

I don't look at the Hot 20 Every body knows me stuff and to be honest, I feel that voting for a Hot 20 image is just fueling that darned thing. I have an idea and I don't want any one having a fit but maybe, instead of complaining about the Hot 20...maybe we could each post a link to an image that we saw in the gallery that we thought was really good and deserving of attention. I'm willing to start this off. I submit to you an image by HarleyBliss. It's just James but I think it's an excellent image. Just something about it strikes me as being a good image. It's called "Regret". Here's a link if you want to check it out: http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=947917&Start=37&Sectionid=1&filter_genre_id=0&WhatsNew=Yes

The problem I see with that is then the forum is filled with links to the gallery. The forum really should be a place where we talk about Poser itself - how to do things like making morphs and adding textures, bugs, latest releases and patches. If people really want to know what is in the galleries then just go to the galleries and look around.

If a new thread was created and people promised to only post points to images in it and engage in no discussion or OT then people bookmarked that one thread and I don't see the harm. Maybe one such thread could be created on the 1st of each month. The intention is good and seeing the best renders might meet the criteria for this forum... people with dial up like me find going to the gallery just to even see the thumbnail impractical and end up not seeing what is the state of the art. Individual references by serious people certainly would have more credence for me than serching for "top" "most viewed" or best rated, etc. Esp. if people gave a sucsict explination of their choice.

Ive posted in another thread my solution to this issue. It conists of bringing newly submitted art pieces right to the frontpage of Renderosity. A "show random image from within X-amount of days". This allows people to see new pieces just as they walk into to 'Rosity and gives people more motivation to submit pieces. "oh hey, i want my pieces to be seen on the front page." kinda thing.

Limit everyone to a single vote a day instead of as many times as you can click the button, that'll make people think more about what they're voting for & hopefully they'll vote for the pictures that actually deserve the votes.

one per day is too much of a limit, maybe three or four.

Krista, go for it, i think it's a good idea, plus that i know many people don't go through the gallery anymore, even with a very fast cable connection the gallery is slow, so to have direct links to good pics would be very cool. By the way is the TOP 20 for Poser pics only?? If you look at some of the pics created in Vue, they are OUTSTANDING (I can't get into vue myself), but they sure never seem to be recognized, seems to me the few times i have visited the top20 they are always pretty girls with flowing hair, time for a change. :)

Another idea would be the previous month members that were in the Hot 20, can not be in the Hot 20 for another 2 months. This means there could be up to 60 Hot 20 Members a quarter.

how about every registered user get one "most favorite image". you can change your MFI at any time and if you dont change your MFI after 2 weeks it changes to none. (removing inactive member votes) the top 20 would be the people on the most MFI lists. this could reduce some of the vote solisiting, because your "friends" could only have their MFI on one image at a time.

Oh please, I hope some moderators or folks who can make suggestions to those in charge are listening. You guys are full of wonderful ideas to solve the problem and I think my goal of getting solutions has actually worked! Now, to get those in charge to listen!

Tyger_purr ( ) posted Wed, 04 May 2005 at 9:24 AM

if you really want to make it hard. set up a system that in order to vote for an image you have to give 3 valid reasons (more than just "its great" or "wow") that the image is good, and one valid criticism.

I like the informal quality (democratic?) of a thread... an other alternative is since favorites images can be put on people's Renderosity Artist's Pages people interested in doing triage could just give the links to their pages and people could bookmark those that are reliable and update frequently. But I prefer the thread idea... not the least because it doesn't demand Renderosity to make changes to how the gallery works but would be a grassroots way of dealing with the issue.

We already have something similar. If you go to Communites and click on "Poser" scroll down to "Cool Images". This is what you do. "To submit an image, please send an IM to one of the Poser mods. Images will be rotated periodically"

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

If you had one thread with everyone posting links to it for a month you'd never see any of the other threads once it hit a certain point! You'd be hitting the next link for days just to get past the stupid link thread because it would be humongous!

Like I said in the previous thread, every week, we post a link to the backroom where we post links to the images that we, as staff, have chosen as the best that we could see while monitoring the galleries. And, that we welcome anyone who would like to see any image get some attention to IM us, and we'll see about getting it on the front page of the Community Page. IMHO, it's much easier to navigate from the Poser Community than it is from just the forum. At the head of the page, you've got links not only to the forum, but to the gallery, free stuff, tutorials, the Poser Products, and everything else. Plus, we periodically put come cool stuff there, and we try to feature at least one really awesome image weekly. Most of them, at least lately, have been quite unconventional. This week, the featured image is quite a fantastically done fantasy character. Again, if you find an image that you think deserves some publicity and attention, let us know. We'll be more than happy to do what we can to see that it gets the attention that it deserves. MorriganShadow Poser Mod.

Mizrael, you are right. It did not occure to me mthat more than a couple dozen interested parties would post to such a thread. I am used to seeing a relatively small group the same members posting and participating actively in the forum. If people did participate en mass it would be a neightmare for the forum. Could someone with some server broadband establish a site with a guestbook that was deleted and archived each month? MorriganShadow, no disrespect, but the impulse maybe to create something seperate and apart from the moderators or the scoring and view counting software... if this is true an off site webpage would indeed be more apropriate than anything here perhaps. The equivalent of Pinguin or whoever it is who has invested his energy to run and host what he intends to be a pruduct review site (my apology for not knowing your name who ever you are). This could be a volunteer gallery review site with people on thier honor to submit only one image a month (not thier own). I have no website at all with my bare bones dial-up ISP.

Most lists no matter how you choose them still end up with the same few names all the time. Friends of the choosers will always be picked first, you can't get away from that. Get rid of the H20 and favorite image lists and nobody has to feel they are left out because of popularity or unfair voting. It's a simple but effective solution. I know, why do it the easy way when the hard way works.

Hot 20 voting?
Gladiatorial combat.
Old school, but it works.

momodot - There's nothing stopping anyone from making a webpage with links to their own favorite images. Just know that, no matter what the choice is, there will always be someone crying "foul", and there is no way that can be guaranteed to be wholly impartial. That's why when posts come about against the Hot 20, we mostly reply with "well, then, vote for the images you like. The Hot 20 is based on Member Voting, and we have nothing to do with it." It's true. The only way to remove an image from the Hot 20 is to remove it from the gallery, which we only do in cases of TOS violations. Any system where the general public votes on something turns into a popularity contest. Why would the Hot 20 be any different? That's why we encourage people to send us IM's with the URL to images that they find exceptional. If you think it's wonderful, chances are, someone else does, too. It may end up on the Poser Community front page, or listed in the Staff Picks. Either way, that's another way for the community to say "hey, this image is great! They really need some more hits/comments/praise/etc..." Cheers! MorriganShadow Poser Mod

MorriganShadow , the more I think of it the more it seems to me this is a matter for linking from outside Rosity. I think the fundemental issue here is that some of us want help seeing the good stuff and find that this good stuff is more often discovered by sensible individuals with individual taste then by mob rule ;) I'm joking about mob rule, I just me collective vote. I would rather a piece had the endorsement of one articulate person then a quarter million votes. I have never liked the work identified by votes, scores, or commitees, yet quite often images will be pointed out by individuals here in the forum and inevitably they are terrific. It seems the kristta is polling for what kind of support there might be for such an effort as organizing this informal situation and this forum seems utterly appropriate place for her to do that... I totasly support here intentions though I believe it could be disruptive to do it on Renderosity. I hope something comes together. As I said, a "guestbook" that could handle the bandwidth would do the job. As for people complaining, I would envision a colective of individual contributers, if someone didn't like how things developed autonomously they could just not visit the site! Or set up there own site, right? Finaly, voting for your friends rather than on merit? I just can't imagine doing that, some of my friends are realy sucky artists!
