Subject: I made a mesh of it

Bobasaur ( ) posted Fri, 24 June 2005 at 10:02 AM ยท edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 8:48 AM

I've been looking through the Doc's tutorials and haven't found the answer to this so I'll ask here: I want to create a figure that is one mesh instead of the multiple objects found in most figures. I want to do this because I want to apply a movie as the texture for the full upper body (abdomen and up including arms). What would probably happen is that I'd create the character in LightWave, name the groups there, and then output it as an .obj file for use in Poser. I'm assuming this is basically how the "unimesh" figures were done. Are there any tutorials on how to set them up with bones? What is different about doing this instead of the seperate objects used as examples in the tutorials? I really do not want to use Poser's Grouping tool - as there a way to avoid that? If I can get the info to do this, I may be able to talk the office into buying me P6 so any help is very appreciated.

Hi Kev, It can be done but ... you still need to use the Grouping Tool to assign the bones (Setup Room) for the figure. cheers, dr geep ;=] P.S. Just don't let NSG do it. ;=]

I already know this stuff but I would just like to say thanks for staying Geep, I thought we were going to lose you.

I was looking at the Set Up one earlier this morning. I'm trying to avoid having to use Posers grouping tool though. It's a real pain with complex objects.

if you don't like poser's grouping tool, you can set the groups in either uvmapper pro or Lightwave. -3dz

@3DZ Just got LW8 at the office. I've never "grouped" before and having a dickens of a time figuring it out. I can make the selections easily - it's just identifying them as "groups" that Poser recognizes. They are apparently different from "parts." Any quick tips that'll save me hours in the manual? @Doc I am constantly amazed by the things you are able to do in Poser. I get so frustrated with trying to select polys within it - probably because I'm spoiled by the abilities in LW. You don't have to win them all to earn a Superbowl ring. You just have to win the the right ones.

Generally I do them in uvmapper myself, but I read over at Poser pros this statement by the3dwizard concerning the problem of grouping in LW,hope it helps...

*the3dwizard wrote:

Sometimes there can be problems with the groups when exporting an object out of LW. This can occur when there are selection sets in LW and you use Create Part ( F8 ) to regroup some polygons. If you look at the object in a text file the groups may look like "neck head" instead of "neck".

Two ways to correct this. One is to edit the groups in a text editor by removed the second group name.

The other method is to delete the offending selection sets. So in the example above you would go to Selection Sets and delete head. This will not delete you head bodypart just the LW selection set.*

you can avoid the grouper by setting your parts up by material in lw....then, in uvmapper, assign your materials to groups.

yes....when you get to the menu you will see...select...then the options....one is "material". then, there is another section to "assign" just assign your selected material to group :*)

Incidently, your movie texture should apply just as well to the figure if it is "parted" instead of "grouped". That's assuming you have the weld commands in the CR2.

Early versions of IV and GV were "parted", because the OBJ importer breaks them up when you bring them into Max. I sorta assumed that was the way Vickie III herself was, until Dodger straightened me out. I still don't have any easy way to make true unimesh figures, except by a super involved scheme where you export in one group then use materials with the group names to select the parts in UV mapper, and then have it (UV Mapper) make the groups, which then have to have the right material names put back on. Dodger actually made the current true Unimesh OBJ files for me.

Anyway, I gather Lightwave might have different tools, I just wanted to say that for most uses there isn't really a problem with detached groups, other than maybe the Poser 6 no-weld bug, anyway. You should be able to Rotoscope (the term for what you want to do) a texture on your character fine, Poser applies textures to materials anyway, not groups.
