Subject: Props for Poser made in Carrara

mapps ( ) posted Tue, 09 August 2005 at 4:03 PM · edited Thu, 31 October 2024 at 4:14 PM

I've been asked many times by new modelers how to make props for poser and what software to use. I use Carrara Studio 3. So I am looking at starting some turorials here in the forum as simple "How to" for new users. Carrara has a great little program called Carrara Basic, a choped down version of the regular version of Carrara, the Demo is fully usable including saving and exporting with limited formats. So I am looking for intrest level for tutorials on making things in Carrara (Full and Basic) for export to be used in poser. I would mark tuts for basic as Carrara 101 and for the Full version as Carrara 102. I am willing to do how to's for both the novice and more advanced users. If you have any intrest please respond here or IM me :-)

Mapps I have been wanting to thank you for your many--continuous!--wonderful freebee Poser downloads. To learn how to make this kind of stuff in Carrara (C4Pro for me) would be a marvelous contribution by you. Yes Please.

Gee, all ya had to do is ask :-) That is why I am doing this, simply because someone asked, I'm pretty easy to get along with. Actualy to be more honest several dozen people asked, but only one needed to for me to say yes. You;d be supprised how friendly the "free contributors" are here. Only stands to reason that people who give alot of stuff away for free are nice folks that are easy to get along with :-) PS A similar thread is alos going in the poser forum since this topic includes both programs. The response so far has been quite quick and popular. The poser forum thread is much longer than this one. :-)

First off let me thank you for all the wonderful poser goodies you've made available Mapps. Thank you! I'd like to see a basic tutorial on how to create articulate props for use in poser. For instance, how do you go about creating a door that can open and close? or a propeller that spins? I'm sure these are basic questions, but I can't be the only one with these q's ;)

mapps, that sounds great! I am a complete newbie and would benefit from some tutorials for Carrara Basics 2.

mapps ( ) posted Tue, 09 August 2005 at 10:32 PM

Well the first TUT is half finished and has 56 screen captures that cover the basic tools of Carrara, how to export to Poser, mapping it in UV Mapper and finishing it off as a Poser Prop. And all ya need is the Basics 2 Demo, which is what I made it in. Or any of the full versions of Carrara. It is just a very simple Crate but the aim is to show how to make the software do most of the work using the powerful tools of Carrara. The basic steps covered are useful in creating any model. If I have done this right anyone, even a never opened a 3D program in my lefe user should have little or no problem. The 56 screen captures show each and every last step. So it is a little like a picture book. Articulate/posable props are just a step up from that. And that will be covered in tutorial 3 or 4.

Thank you! I am looking forward to seeing it. I bought Basics 2, but have found it a little confusing because I am used to other programs.

The basic into TUT is almost finished. It will be finised on the weekend for sure. One of the things I like about Carrara is the functions are color coded (red, green, blue) makes it easy to color code the TUT to match, which is what I am doing. :-) Such as Move it on the X-Axis all X items in Carrara are marked in red so the TUT line is also red. I think this may help since allot of folks are not too familiar with Axis but do understand "use the red one"...lol

cant wait to see it. may i mirror it on www.poserprofessional.com?

I'm looking forward to seeing your tutorial too. I just tried the Carrara 3D Basics 2 demo two days ago after you mentioned it and I was immediately impressed by how much more intuitive it seems to be (and I've tried the demos of just about EVERY other modeler out there). :) I'm going through the help PDF now to learn what I can before I make any decisions about buying, but I'm pretty sure now that it's going to be either Carrara or nothing. One quick question if you don't mind - why does Carrara use the Z axis for 'up and down'? Thanks in advance, take care. SnowS

SnowSultan, I want to review some of your products on my site! www.poserprofessional.com. Take a look and email me at: jarretttowe@hotmail.com

mapps ( ) posted Sat, 13 August 2005 at 11:55 AM

Yes jtbullet i put a disclamer right in the TUT that states you may feel free to repost it as long as no fee is charged for downloading it :-) LOL SnowSultan most program use the standard X-Y-Z except poser, all models have to be rotated 90 degrees for poser to import them Right side up. Not sure why that is but when you export from Carrara you can choose the option to rotate the model during the export :-)

SnowSultan ( ) posted Sat, 13 August 2005 at 12:16 PM

Thanks for replying. That's strange though, I don't remember ever seeing Z used for the vertical axis in any other program before. I'm looking at an open window in Cinema 4D right now, and the coordinates show Y pointing up. Maybe I'm not understanding your explanation though. :) Thanks, SnowS

snowsultan, in classical mathematics, using Cartesian co-ordinates, there are certain academic conventions which Poser doesn't follow. usually in a 2D graph, x is horizontal and y is vertical. in a 3D graph, the xy plane is usually shown as flat to the ground, and the z-axis is then up and down, orthogonal to (normal to) the xy plane. but these are mere conventions, and there's no harm in the unconventional, within reason ;-) mapps, I'm interested in your tutorials. where can one view them?

mapps ( ) posted Sat, 13 August 2005 at 9:33 PM

OK Snowsultan could be my mistake, the ones that I can remember that is the way it worked but perhaps I am mistaken. I have been using Mainly Carrara (RayDream) for the past 15 years. Miss Nancy the first one is finished and here it is :-) This is the first of my tutorials for creating models in Carrara to be used in poser as the basis of a prop or figure. This is just the low res version (it's still 5 megs) the highres version and the supporting files will be bosted on Monday. The tutorail finished with adding textures that are supose to be with the file but are not there because they will be posted on Monday. But any square wood texture can be used or you can use Poser 5 or 6 materials if you are using P5 or 6. Other than that the tutorial is complete. It can be grabbed of my site using this link http://www.freewebs.com/mapps/downloadstutorial.htm or by pasting this link into your browser. http://webzoom.freewebs.com/mapps/TUT%201%20Low%20Res.zip If you have any questions or comments post them here in this thread :-)
