Thanks in part to our gracious moderator, and a message he posted last month (referenced above). I encourage any other Carrara beginners to check out the above link. I've been playing with the technique trying to duplicate litst's efforts for a week, and it has really helped me "put things together". I was getting pretty frustrated for awhile, I think because I had been over-complicating things in the vertex modeller. Now I'm having fun with it, using this simpler approach. Once I thought I'd gotten the hang of duplicating litst's work (sort of), I decided to try something on my own, using the same method. The results are above. It needs some tweaking yet, but I'm pretty happy with it, as it is my first character that has, well, character. Sorry to blather on so long, I'm just pretty pumped up at finally making some progress with this... I figured you guys would understand. --Terri

Such a cute puppy! And I guess I'm just going to have to knuckle down and learn the vertex modeler; it's obviously powerful, but it's so strange....

My coworker asked me to please put eyes in, as he was watching Event Horizon last night. Seriously, I found the stuff litst posted really helpful. I think it would make a great tutorial (hint, hint, O Powers That Be). I bet if you try to duplicate the stuff at the link I posted, you'd have the same epiphany I did. I don't know how litst went about it, but I started with a block. Then, to add the vertices, I'd select one edge at a time and subdivide it. I get confused when there are a lot of vertices. So adding them one at a time was a big help to me, it broke the things I needed to do into smaller units. Other folks might find this a tedious way to go about things. I could probably post a step-by-step if anyone is interested, but it'd kinda be a case of the blind leading the blind. --Terri

Great dog Terri ! Vertex modeller is not hell, if you can tame it . I've seen something last night that might interrest you . That's on the link ! Some masterpiece, but the guy who did it is a pro and he uses Maya =) . It might give you some ideas for your model . As promised, a modelling tutorial will come ... when it will come ;) I'm working on my website now, so it's getting closer and closer ! There will be free stuff too . litst litst.@freesbee.fr

Wow. Thanks for the link. Cool dog. Right sort of ears, too. I'm trying to caricature my own dog, and that's the sort of ears he has. I had a lot of trouble with the "fold over". I'll have to study this pic most carefully. It actually looks quite a bit like my (real) dog, only he's a hairy beast. Haven't quite figured out how I'm going to depict his "mutton chops". I'm trying to go for a cartoony look, so I don't want to go overboard on the details. I may just cheat and pretend that Harlan is a short-haired dog for now. Glad to hear you are working on a tutorial. I wasn't just kissing up to the moderator when I said I found you frogilla post helpful, heh. I've been playing around with this stuff for months without much progress to show for it, which is why I'm kind of jazzed right now. --Terri

Nice Dog Terri, It took me quite a while to learn to use the vertex modeler. Two things that help me are 1) keep it simple until you have the basic shape that you want and 2)if the model is symmetrical model one side and then duplicate it with symmetry and weld the seams together. I know what you mean about being pumped up when things finally fall into place. I'm glad we have this forum to express our feelings when things go right. I've tried to explain my 3D successes to friends and they have no idea what I'm talking about.

Keithw, i know what you're talking about when you say your friends don't know what you're talking about ;) We live in an other world ! litst
