Yes. JPeter, in fact, has a number of products here and at DAZ based on that concept.
And, is it difficult?
No more difficult than applying a texture and transmap to a one-sided square prop, then placing a point light in the proper spot.
Experiment with the material's ambient channels to achieve the proper level of self-illumination. I also recommend disabling shadows on the square prop.

I have been trying to make alpha planes of fire in Poser 6. Has anyone tried this? And, is it difficult?
