Subject: Partly unscalable body parts

Phantast ( ) posted Tue, 17 January 2006 at 6:54 AM · edited Fri, 13 October 2023 at 4:00 PM

I found an odd thing the other day. I was working with a hair figure that had several parts: head, and some braids. What I wanted to do was scale down the head to something very small and just leave the braids. (I could have made the head invisible, but I had reasons for not doing that.) The head of the hair figure had the form of a scalp cap and some bangs at the sides. The bangs were part of the same body part (head) and the same material zone. When I tried to scale the head, the scalp cap scaled, but not the bangs. Didn't matter if I used the main scale or the x,y,z scales. The bangs would not scale. So I thought, "OK, brute force approach - I'll scale it with a magnet". That had no effect either. In the end I got round it by getting rid of the head altogether - but I'm puzzled as to how it can be that an integral bit of a body part can refuse to scale with the rest of it.

Scaling is very tricky. Most peple ignore it completely. Even though we see the dials, most don't support them. I am not discounting anyone's abilities. It is jsut a fact. Basically most people don't know how to do it. Joints and scaling are not an area that more than small portion can customize. Most use seed cr2's from utilities or a copy of the figure's or make a new one. You can use a magnet. Just double click it and include the other hair body parts in the magnet under "add element to deform"

Well, no, actually. I loaded the magnet to the head. The bangs are part of the head. There is no other body part for the bit that won't scale other than the one the magnet was already affecting. My understanding is that the scale control in Poser should affect anything that has a size. The results may not look pretty, but turning the scale to 10% should affect any mesh object that isn't locked. In this case, a chunk of the mesh was simply immune.

I depends on the scaling paremeters. Like joints, when you open the joint editor, you can change how a part scales. If you are up to it, you could experiment on a copy cr2 and try tweaking the scale zones.

I've been noticing an oddity ... I think specific to P6 ... which sounds parallel to your problem. When a figure is built with some parts inside an attached prop, P6 seems to ignore those inner parts. In my case, I had built an instrument cluster with a needle, lens, meter face, etc, and then attached it to a car. The cluster showed up as an attached prop in the resulting figure, but the needle was no longer movable; it was just a fixed part with no parameters. The tail part within a hair prop sounds similar to a needle within a meter.

A mystery I found way back was that I could not magnet the P4 Male testicals... strange... the magnet effected only the penis. And this is a single body part. I believe this was the case.

Here is the story on Poser scaling, this applies to P4 and P5, don't know if there is anything diffrent in P6. Poser uses two types of scaling channel "scale" and "propergatingScale" an actor, prop, or other element may use either, in the P4 characters BODY is the only actor that uses "propergatingScale". When "propergatingScale" is used all the chilldren will scale (down through infinite generations). When "scale" is used only the element contaning the scale channel will scale. Both types of channel usually use "Scale" for the dial name, so you can't tell from looking at the dial which channel type it is. You can change the channel type by editing the file in a text editor. Elements that that have the 'bend' attribute turned off (0=off, 1=on) won't be affected by magnets. Phantast, the head may be using a "scale" channel type, and the bangs may ahve the "bend" attribute set to "0". There again this may be some new P6 bug, as sugested by ockham. Momodot, you can scale the P4 Male scrotum with magnets, but this may not work on a very cold day.

Your guy musta not had enough iron in his diet Momodot. Mine, that is my P4 man's are magnetic, but the result of my test would have made a seasoned Al Quaida operative talk so I won't present it here :-)
