Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
well good news is the material room has a "simple" mode so if the nodes scare you, you can use this mode that.... from what i understand.... is very similar to p4. Dynamic hair and clothing is picking up pretty slow so you probably dont need to worry too much about jumping on that bandwaggon right away... besides from what i understand of dynamic clothing. it is much easier to make than conforming clothing. With the upcomming release of P7 (rumored to be released this year but not "soon") the jump will only get bigger. P4 and P6 can co-exist so if you dont want to make the complete jump you can still hang onto 4. Jessi has a bit of a following but Miki seems to have surpassed her.

Ditto TygerPurr. The 'simple' mode is actually easier and more intuitive than P4's material dialog. I was equally hesitant to dive into the world of shaders and nodes, but found that it was possible to gradually slide across into that world from the 'simple' tab. This wasn't possible in P5.

you could design for Judy. That's P5NudeWoman, the character that came with Poser 5 and is included in Poser 6. She is far, far underrated. Greate morphs, capable of quite a lot. Some people, like myself, favor a variant of Judy called "Eternal Judy" which is a $12.50 add-on to judy, giving her the most fantatic morph system of any Poser figure, included, mainstream, etc. ::::: Opera :::::
who is miki? a new figure from Content Paradise >Is she a poser native? or is she from daz or somewhere else? She is made by E-frountier. she doesnt come with p6 (unless you buy the full "special eddition" currently for sale) but she is made for p6. if you go to www.contentparadise.com she is pretty much everywhere. I guess she has kinda become the mainstream.

P6 IS a serious jump. After all, it's 7 years younger than ProPack. P4 and P6 can coexist peacefully. If you have a large P4 library you can link it to P6, you don't have to copy everything over. Nested folders and multiple runtimes help to keep things organized. Almost everything made for/in P4 will work out of the box in P6, with the possible exception of bump maps and some specific ERC crosstalk related stuff. The rendering, lighting and material capabilities of Poser 6 are far, far more advanced than those of Poser 4. Dynamic cloth is a great solution for loose flowing cloth - more natural than conforming cloth ever can be, even loaded with tons of morphs. Dynamic hair hasn't really taken off yet, but looks promising, especially for animators. Curious Labs/e-frontier hasn't been very lucky in choosing their stock models. P5 Judy is a fairly realistic female model, with a rather homely default face, smallish breasts and not much of a waistline. Not supermodel material like the DAZ Victoria models. Unlike the other Poser models she has genitalia modeled in, straight from the outset, not as an afterthought. P5 Don is an ordinary looking guy. Both models are relatively low-poly, in the order of 25,000 polygons. More than Posette, about equal to Victoria/Michael 1/2, much less than the Millenium 3 figures. P6 Jessi is a fantasy figure. Alas, her hands and feet are badly done. Too large and they don't bend well. Her upper arms are too short and her forearms too long. P6 James is actually quite good. His face is very different from the Michael faces, heavier brows, pronounced almost angular face and a square chin. Great expressions! You're an armor buff. Good armor for James and Jessi would be VERY welcome! Think about the P6 possibilities. A metal breastplate (conforming, rigid) with a chain mail skirt attached (dynamic). Long chain hauberk. Using raytraced materials to have the metal REALLY reflect. Using displacement mapping for scratches and dents in the armor. The possibilities are endless. Last but not least: thank you for providing those wonderful outfits for poor old underused Posette!

anything that works in Poser 4 that doesn't look like it's sprayed on is great in my book (like I've made that much myself..;) now I have a reason to use Posette..might be time to use her in a 3rd pic..;) And I'm still using Poser 4, so hang in there..

Grateful for the freebies you've so generously shared. My experience as a user of P4, Daz Studio and P6 (I never owned P5) is that if something is useable in P4, a lot of DS-only users would probably be able to use those. If something is made for P6 strictly, one could end up with a lot more fancy effects, as well as more computationally-intensive demands on the end-user's machines. Users with older computer processors will most likely have a tougher time with dynamic hair and cloth, if you offer these. Materials Room can produce gorgeous results, but these won't be available for Poser 4 users, if created in Advance Mode. One can't make those BUM files for Poser 4 users inside of Poser 6. One has to make decisions on saving in compressed formats and using external morphs, which Poser 4 users cannot handle, but Poser 6 users can. But over all, I think the decision to upgrade to Poser 6 is not just based on what you want to make for other people, smilez. IMHO, from a creative aspect, perhaps you will enjoy using Poser 6 's features. I find myself kicking P6 a bit now and then, even insulting it, but it's been an upgrade I have not regretted so far.

Out of all those figures, Posette has the best one. I still maintain that "Jessie" is butt ugly and looks like an Extraterrestrial Alien.

I have to agree i still like Posette the best. Judy is just too big. In every bloody direction. She's too tall, too wide, too thick, her behind looks like is has a good 10 lbs of meat right there on her cheeks. her thighs are too big .. though the calves are well proportioned to those huge thighs... I hope she has a lot of head morphs... shudders... Jesie's... kinda cute... her elbows look a little better done than posettes.. but dear god .. she has orangatang arms .. and it's all forearm!!! the muscle tone is kinda nice, but her hips flare out just a little too much, and did i mention those arms?!?! what were they thinking?
sorry Mordikar, how can you judge just by looking at a few images. You don't have this model, right? Yet you slash and smash it from a few renders??????? And he's what I don't get...did you people ever hear of morphs and magnets and scale? I simply do NOT understand how people come to these extreme hyper judgements on the DEFAULT look of a character. It's ridiculous. Shouldn't the usefulness of a model be based on what sort of flexibility, variety, extension, bending and the mesh itself? IT IS A TOOL. ::::: Opera :::::

Ok opera you have a valid point. And that DOES look a lot better than the default mesh. My only issue at this point is that I model based off of the default figure and i'm horrible at morphing. Anything more than a simple magnet morph is annoying to me. :( guess i might have to get better at it. Or make my own pre-morphed judy cr2 to distribute with my stuff for her. If i knew how to transfer morph channels from figure to clothing and make em work it might be nice. But i've neer gotten that to work.
the irony is, I only spun up a few dials. I increased the y-axis on her abdomen to make her look longer and slimmer, then I went to the hip and played with all four scale dials until her (to my mind terrific but apparently to many, oversized) flanks and behind were more svelt.
With Judy, one always has to remember: there is an unspoken secondary power source: Eternal Judy.
If you purchase EJ for $12.50, it gives you by far the most prodigious, generous, flexible and potent body and face morph set of any character for Poser ever created, BY FAR.
Your point about making freebies for only the default....I don't know how to respond to that, actually. The larger and more tragic issue is that Judy, the best Poser female model EVER, was ignored. She hardly even has a cult following! The main reason is: the V3 craze. Because the "default" P5NudeWoman is not built like a brick outhouse, and because there was not a deliberate attempt to establish a sex-model/ultra Amazon paradigm, ala Vickie, for her, she did not catch on.
I'll make one last point and then get off my soap box. Notice the arms and shoulders. Her shoulders do NOT have the unsightly shoulder pads found on Jessie (and ALL unimesh figures), nor the inward-curving bizzare upper arm.

I've seen renders of Jessie, I've even tried Jessie. I've seen the "remakes" of Jessie too; and to me she always looks butt ugly no matter how she's dressed up or done up. Message edited on: 03/12/2006 18:24

Well, what Jim Burton did with Jessie is an extreme makeover. Glamorous Jessi looks VERY nice. The difference with original Jessi is in the same order as the difference between Eternal Judy and original Judy.

Hrmm... well i have lots to think on ... however i have 2 issues. 1) I still am not sure how i'll pull off transferring morphs from figure to armour/clothing. 2) The money I THOUGHT i was going to have to buy Poser 6 vanished in a puff of wife-logic... :( I still don't see why she can't spare a couple of hundred from her bill paying spree to let me buy poser... but it looks like she changed her mind on me, and so far i've not been winning the "discussions".

For the past couple years now i've come and gone and released several freebies which i think are very good. Most importantly I've accomplished my goal of releasing a really NICE set of platemail for posette. In the last couple of years or so poser 5 and 6 have come and i'm still working with poser 4. I'm considering poser 6 .. and maybe setting posette aside and starting to work on stuff for the poser 6 female .. her names jessi right? Any how i'm not real sure if i want to go this route or not.. or if it's even worth it. If i start designing for jessi then it's all p6 and up and the p4 users won't get anything good. Also from what i've seen p6 looks like a serious jump. the material room has all theser nodes i keep hearing about and stuff like that .. and of course theres all the dynamic cloth stuff to have to worry about. So I guess i'm just trying to get some feedback from the gang...
