DAZ Productions Acquires Eovia US Corporation
For Immediate Release     Deal Bolsters DAZ’s Commitment to High-Quality, Affordable 3D Solutions and Ensures Solid Future for Eovia’s Widely-Acclaimed Software

Draper, Utah – April 25, 2006 – DAZ Productions Inc., a leading developer of professional quality 3D models and software, today announced that it has acquired Eovia™ Corporation, developer and publisher of leading 3D animation, modeling and rendering solutions, based in Mountain View, Calif. Effective immediately, DAZ Productions has taken ownership of Eovia Corporation including its entire development, marketing and sales divisions and all the technology rights to Carrara™, Eovia’s 3D modeling, animation and rendering software. DAZ Productions has also acquired all technology rights to Hexagon, Eovia’s 3D modeling software, from Eovia Europe S.A. DAZ Productions is not acquiring Eovia Europe S.A.

“This move provides an important step forward in achieving our vision to expand the 3D market to the masses by providing high-quality 3D software that is economical and easy to use,” said Dan Farr, president of DAZ Productions. “In a short period of time, Eovia has generated tremendous industry buzz and established itself as an important player in the world of approachable 3D software. By delivering professional-level tools with remarkable affordability and responding to the competitive needs of professional artists, Eovia’s Carrara and Hexagon product families have turned heads and earned new respect throughout the 3D community. By bringing together Carrara and Hexagon with the Bryce®, Mimic™ and DAZ|Studio™ solutions, we will provide a compelling suite of 3D software tools with a unified vision.”

The combination of DAZ and Eovia will provide customers with a more powerful set of solutions for creating, managing and rendering compelling 3D media. This unification will meet a wider set of customer needs and have a significantly greater opportunity to grow into new markets.

“Now is a great time for DAZ and Eovia products to come together as a dynamic force in the 3D industry,” said Bob Stockwell, director of sales and marketing for Eovia Corporation. “DAZ is already a proven leader in the content field, and over the last two years Eovia has changed industry perceptions to compete effectively against much more expensive 3D programs. We are excited about the opportunity this provides for Carrara and Hexagon. The passionate Eovia user community will be pleased to know that DAZ will continue to support and develop Eovia’s most celebrated products.”

Eovia and DAZ share a similar philosophy based upon ease-of-use, power and affordability. DAZ has long been known for providing world-class 3D assets and tools at mass-market prices. Eovia’s flagship products, Carrara and Hexagon, offer professional and approachable 3D modeling, animation and rendering capabilities. Eovia and DAZ have been partners since 2004, when Eovia became the exclusive representative for all DAZ products in Europe.

Terms of the acquisition have not yet been released. Additional information and an FAQ on the acquisition are available on the DAZ website (www.daz3d.com) and the Eovia website (www.eovia.com).

Go DAZ go!

I guess we need some new DAZ forums here for sure now.  Especially a "NV3ITWS rendered in Carrara" forum.

The DAZ forum here is not a popular one since DAZ has it's own online forum.  Eovia was never into having their own forum.  Now they are reaping...

DAZ will ask, "What about Bob?" The guy that was supposed to be marketing Eovia.

I was considering using the 3dworld cheap upgrade to carrara 5 pro, now I'm not sure, will there be a bryce / carrara hybrid soon? carrara has many of the lacking lighting techniques that bryce needs, bryces terrain and sky gens are great, both need better plant generation.......

I can understand why DAZ done it. I'm sure their future can not be only selling characters and props. There are more and more outside doing the same. So they have to find a second leg to stand on. And so their softwaredivision is growing.

But where they want to go? Bryce and Carrara, hm, could be combined. So that a Carrara standard is like Bryce on steroids and then there is a Carrara Pro with the additions of the Bryce specialties. I would kill Bryce. Sorry to say, but I think it is the only way. So Carrara need import for Bryceobjects, textures and so on. And a texturelab plugin to be able to work with the original Brycetextures too.

I would create a fusionprogram between Mimic and DAZ Studio. The free version of Studio without the mimicfunctions and a pro version with mimic included.

Only some ideas...

Thomas

What about Bob?....Bob Stockwell along with the entire Carrara development  and marketing team now work under the name DAZ. The offices in mountain view remain open that is were they will continue to develop and market Carrara same as before.
Bob Stockwell is a brilliant Director of Marketing  and  management he  and the entire development team are the reasons why  Carrara and Hexagon have been doing so good. So none of that has change it will only get better..

Yeah, I knew that..just odd that nothing was there in the renderosity one. It's kinda new tho. The DAZ forum needs some overhaulin tho. It's a nightmare to look thru. Worse than renderosity.

Agree with Thomas - content integration and marketing cross platforms to start with. Why would the Bryce program continue to be developed? : daz say "when daz aqquired Bryce from Corel, we soon found out that Bryce basically needs to be rewritten" - that's what they were proposing to do for Bryce 6, saying it was necessary for stability and the ability to do any future Bryce development. And that it was a costly proposition to do this. But now, when you have a live product in Carrara which is probably better written and has some developers around who know it, that could subsume what Bryce does, why on earth would you develop Bryce? So my bet is on Bryce being relegated to no more development and marketed as a low cost intro, while Carrara gets taken forward with the ability to read Bryce content. Regards John

Gog ( ) posted Wed, 26 April 2006 at 7:33 AM

Fair point John, I think it may just be that they lever the good bits of bryce into carrara, although (IMHO) carrara's interface could do with some work, the bryce ui is confusing at first, but pretty good long term (that said my carrara experience is like 3 weeks with version 2.1.... as I mentioned above I thought about taking the 3dworld upgrade to 5)

I've used Bryce and Carrara extensively. If you have only used Carrara 2.1 then you need to download the 5.1 demo. It is like night and day, and the interface is updated. As far as Bryce, I wouldn't want to see any of it in Carrara. Bryce is old , slow, and very limited. Carrara has far surpassed Bryce in speed, functionality and features. In my opinion people should just forget about Bryce and move on to Carrara. Honestly, I opened Bryce once about a year ago, and I felt like both hands were tied behind my back.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Wed, 26 April 2006 at 3:52 PM

Eovia should have included Carrara Studio 3 (not 2.1) in 3D World Mag.  Who would use 2.1?  That's like a slap in the face.  Five-year-old software.  Whoopy.

Well EON did the same thing by putting out Vue3 and some still use it.  Some people just can't afford to upgrade.

hmmmmmmm...I posted this before & it disappeared 😕

dlk30341,
Renderosity, is bad about losing stuff. I always copy everything..hate losing a post you typed. Altho since the upgrade I haven't had this happen, but did happen all the time. Still times out tho. I am not to sure they load balance...never bothered to see if there was evidence of this.

Something that no one has mentioned is that at least the too orphaned brothers are back together. It all started years ago with Metacreations. Remember KPT and all that cool stuff. Well know they are back together. Poser went to the competition. Detailer died off with version two. Painter is till hostage under Corel's control, but I hear that at least they have been further developing it.
