I was bored at work monday, so I made this... Now what do I do with it??? I still need to add ropes and slats to connect the posts... Then I can bring it into bryce for texturing and scenery...

Awesome! I'm working on a wreck that would look right at home tied to such a place. (I'm also working on bubble wrap. lol!)

there's thousands of Bryce mats out there, including several that would look good. The trick is to scale the wood mats to accurately reflect the texture. but you know all this already..;) I've got plenty of links to mats should you need them..;)

Docks? Like the last LOST episode where Saed, Sun and Jin go to the docks to rescue Jack, Sawyer and Freckles? Yeah I'd a thought the others knew that a rescue party was coming, who was in it and by what means they were coming. I'd a got Sun to sail out a half mile, made dummies to take Saed and Jin's positions and yeah I'd a set a fire alright - to the docks -gotten back to the boat knowing it was a resource I could not afford to lose.and that Benjamin would consider it the prize. There would have been six less of the others when I waz through but I would not know where the base camp was. Saed's way they can watch the sails and find the camp providing the party can climb the mountain in time to see where it sails to, but they might not be that energetic.

What was your question again?.

Wood at the seaside in wharves and jetties always gets bleached a dull grey colour. Wood on the upright piles will have a barnacle layer around the tidal zone then be darker below the surface, but dull grey above the tidal zone... 20 years in the Navy was good for something :-)

An interesting challange to create a good texture mat for the upright piles, or cheat and use a photo.

I'm thinking about wandering down to Dana Point (local harbor) andd take some texture snapshots.  But yeah, svarg, you caught on, I'm still in the modelling stage.
It's in max at the moment. I tried making rope around pots yesterday, and didn't like much what I need to do in max. I may import it into another program to add the ropes.

Perhaps I'll find a seagull or something in the poser menagerie.  I wanna add some more modelling detail to the wharfs/piers.... if anyon has any good or goofy ideas, I'm all ears!

I'd really like to find an old sailor type character for poser. Perhaps later down the road I'll make one, but tht's waaaaay down the road. Like, years...

Don't forget the white stains of seagull poop, always find that on jetties :-)

And you could try adding a fater/son sitting with legs dangling fishing perhaps...

What does a klingon poop look like, and do they poop the wy seagulls do, while perched on a pier?
Pier Perched Klingon Poop... say THAT 20 times fast!

How about a Klingon bird of prey blowing up the pier, using the concussion effect to kill fish. Then the Klingons sitting on the tips of the bird of preys wings above the disruptors scooping up the fish. While seagulls poop on them.

This model would be absolutely perfect with a steamboat model I just snaked from Renderosity Freebies.

If this is a vertically short pier, don't forget to put "bumpers" on those piles, as to prevent damage to both them and the boats.  Old bumpers were made of wrapped rope, new ones, cut up tire halves.
The other thing to possibly consider (depending on the era you had in mind)  Lights, lanterns or torches may be an appropriate addition.  Oh... especially the safety pier lights that are often at the end of it so boats don't slam into it and know which is the port and starbord (or if you're feeling Twainian Stabbord and Labbord) sides.

Textures... meh... they can come later.

It's looking like this is going to be another high quality model, So I hope I'm not kibbutzing too much for you. :c)

Rayraz ( ) posted Sun, 15 October 2006 at 1:59 PM

You could make a father klingon unwrapping their newly delivered ship-wreck whyle his son is busy popping the wrapping, then u could make a seagull sitting there fishing that gets startled by the popping noice and in a scared reaction creates a few white stains on the peer.

That would sum up the ideas posted here so far into a nice little scene..

Knot having any luck with your rope? Can't string any good ideas together? Trouble getting your design tied down?

mboncher ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2006 at 7:38 AM

How're you trying to model the rope?  Remember bumpers made out of rope are wrapped in large torus like chunks, sometimes multiple layers thick.  I don't know if that will help or if you are talking of stringing rope along.

tom271 ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2006 at 9:20 AM

In Rhino you can do spirals then you can extrude a circle...   There is a method to doing this.. I'll find it if this is the situation...  we haven't heard from Connie....

....Whweeew....
The gods of internet explorer crashing just saved me from making the cornyest post ever and risk getting tied up and lead away....

It's a max thing. Something I know how to do in other programs but I'm trying to learn in max. I posted a question in max forum, seemed like it belonged there...

Of course, I could always do it the easy way, and export to a program where I can do exactly what I want to do, but noooo, I have to torture myself with learning something new...
Why do I do this to myself????????????  (don't answer that)

One way to make a rope (not one that will handle close scrutiny) an to keep the polygons reasonable, is to use twisted cubes.  I did this on my laptop in Bryce 5.5 in a couple minutes.  The sun finally came out here in San Diego and I can't see my screen to well (I'm outside) so I don't know how it will look.

Anyway, it was made of 1x1x1 cubes (Bryce units) with a 15 degree twist.  I grouped about 10 and duplicated them and gave the new group a little rotation (to give the "sagging" appearance.  Then repeated that a few times.

As you can see, the right side doesn't look too realistic, but usually ropes tend to be much smaller (further away in the scene) so the use of cubes wouldn't be as obvious.

Of course a better texture could be substituted and you may not even have to twist the cubes.

I used to know Kate Nary (or was that catenary?) Anyrate It might help with positioning angle of the dangle of the rope to know ol' Kate.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Wed, 18 October 2006 at 6:53 PM

1st theorem of foreign body attractions:
Angle of the dangle is inversly proportionate to Katrina's sag.

Corrolary to that is that most of foreign bodies of same charges will repel, regardless of the nagle of the dangle or the sag. There are exceptions to it, but they only serve to confirm the theorem.
...I'm having highschool flashbacks....

I once read in a LightWave tutorial, "3D modeling makes higher math fun!"  You might want to ask one of the guys if Bryce 6 has a primitive for rope. haha!

tom271 ( ) posted Wed, 18 October 2006 at 10:04 PM

I think phisics is being re-written..  some particles of the same charges have been observed to now  be attracting each other and mingling with foreign particles of another matter.  These foreign particles  seem to be occupying the same space and matter as resident charges are. This behavior of same particles bumping each other in a quasi manner, disrupts conservative energies everywhere....

After reading your last post Tom I want to know......

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

tom271 ( ) posted Wed, 18 October 2006 at 11:34 PM

I think it was the rooster...  He intermingled with the chicken and she laid an egg.....

Now she's crossed the road to get to the other side and get some health care...

Why you ask...?

poor cat...

bikermouse ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2006 at 4:16 AM

Shirley you jest - Katrina is my cat's name. Catenary is actually an alogrithm you can use to calculate the sag in a wire or rope. If you no believe me you can google catenary. Meanwhile I've discovered that if my cat starts playing with my computer's wires all I have to do is say "Lucy, you got some 'splaining to do." and she usually backs off. but you probably already knew most of that.

(anyone wanna trade a gray and white tabby cat who seems to be in heat five weeks out of four for a black labrador retriever?)
