Subject: "Read Me" problem

ashley9803 ( ) posted Mon, 11 June 2007 at 12:05 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 3:23 PM

Whenever I install using a Daz .exe file the last thing it asks is if I want to open the Read Me file.
I say yes but they never open in my browser and I have to go looking for them in the P6 folder.
They're there, but just don't open at the end of the install process.
I always look at these to see where things have dropped.
Is Firefox the problem or is the install looking in the wrong place.
Anyone with the same problem?
Can I do anything about this?

Might be your firewall or popup blocker.

I know it's a browser issue because if I temporarily set IE as my default browser, they launch without problems.

I have just now got used to deselecting the "Show readme" box and opening it from Windows Explorer instead.

It sometimes works for me in Firefox but most often not - I normally just take the tick out of the box

My default browser is Opera, and things like that open fine in it - however I remember having to do some fiddling to make that happen. There's a similar option in Firefox. Go to Tools > Options (in Firefox 2, anyway) and on the Main tab, click the Check Now button. If FireFox isn't your default browser, it will ask if you want to make it so. Worth a try.

Thanks Bob. But I think Firefox is my default. If I open an HTML it opens in Firefox.
Can you remember any more about that fiddling?
Could the problem be that products made prior to P6 or P7 are looking for a different folder to find the read me?, ie. looking for the Poser 5 folder rather than one named Poser 6. Just a stab in the dark.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Mon, 11 June 2007 at 4:30 AM

Sorry about that, it was a long shot. As I remember, the rest of my fiddling was to do with making links in e-mails open in the correct browser, so probably not relevant here. In what way, exactly, do the readmes "not open"? Do you get a Not Found error, or something else? I'd have thought that if the path information was wrong, then the readmes wouldn't open for me either.

"I'd have thought that if the path information was wrong, then the readmes wouldn't open for me either."
That makes sense Bob. I do get a message but can't remember what it says, I think it's an "unable to find"?. I'll look closer when I next install.
It doesn't happen all the time, but most of the time.

You piqued my curiosity now, so I downloaded a DAZ freebie and extracted it to see what happened. The readme opened fine, but I've worked out what's wrong. I normally install to a temp folder, and place the files I want in the place I want them. My temp folder path has no spaces in it. If you're installing to a normal Windows Poser folder, the path will probably be of the form c:Program FilesCurious LabsPoserN...). To be correct, the path should have quote marks around it, or else the browser will break the URL at the first space; in other words, it will try to open "c:Program" (and possibly "FilesCurious" etc.) I tried installing to a folder with spaces in the name, and got an error as detailed above (in Opera; I imagine FireFox would act the same). There were a total of four Not Found errors. I wouldn't be surprised if IE handled local file URLs with spaces in them more tolerantly. If this is the same problem that you see, there isn't much you can do about it; but do mention it to DAZ, because they should be able to fix it in future releases.

hmm...I just assumed it was trying to run IE, and anything else was a problem. It happens to me, most times...I use Firefox.

Is your P6 runtime called "Poser 6"? or "Poser6". Mine never open because of the space in my folder name.

I believe EnglishBob has the right of it... I use Firefox most often... I have IE on the system also... and have seen the same thing, solved much the same way... the spaces tend to cause the problem. At least, with me, too. Lou.

Sorry, EnglishBob.... I had a "ooo, ooo, I know this!" moment. I'll go sit down now. :blushing:

Thanks fellas,
Will removing the space in "Poser 6" cause any problems?, either using Poser, opening .pz3's etc.
Suppose I should just try it.
Thanks again.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Tue, 12 June 2007 at 6:18 AM

Ashley: you'd have to remove all spaces from the path to be effective. If you installed to c:temp for example and then moved the files into position it would work; that's what I do. If you remove the space from the Poser path you'd need to alter the registry entries so that PZ3 associations (for example) would still be valid. I think you would probably break Poser's help file also. It's more trouble than it's worth, in other words. Kalon: no worries. I've done that plenty of times myself. ;-)

Thanks Bob.
Don't think I'll bother if it leads to other problems.
Suppose I'll just need to find the Read Me manually, no big problem.
Good to find someone who used the net in the hours I do.
As most people here are Americans, their asleep when I post.
If you're an English Bob, I guess it must be about 11:30am  this morning, it's 9:30pm here (in your future). I still find it funny how yesterday for me is today for some.
All the best.
