hmmm yeah i know that i guess i should make it more clear so here is the tutorial I am following from the brushes I purchased on the MP
forsakensoul.com/help/Ravnhearts%20Tutorial.pdf
Now as you read through it you see in several places they talk about changing a layer color to white or black not the whole layer its self but the item in the layer from your paint brush.
So thats what i'm trying to figure out how she did it in the tutorial that part was left out :( hope this makes it better what I'm trying to do. Im not trying to add color to a layer but change the color of the paint brush item itself in the layer.
CTRL+Click on the layer will select the item on the layer.
Then you can fill it.
Also you can create Solid color adjustment layer, and either group it with previous layer to fill the item or select the item and ALT click on Solid color layer mask and fill it with black. Then invert the mask, that way you can have multiple layers colored with same color leaving others alone and another advantage is that you can change the color whenever you want :)
There is just about another mill. of ways to fill the item, but this are most common IMHO :)
Ok I was just look at what you need exactly, for that its better to use Channel mixer and set to monochrome, then you have much more power to get exact black and white contrast that you want :)

Yeah its very handy, but item must be on transparent layer of course otherwise it will select whole layer :)
You can add to selection with CTRL+SHIFT+Click on another layer.
Or substract with CTRL+ALT+ Click on another layer.
There is tons of other shortcuts for layers, so I`ll stop here lol. :)

Im trying to follow this tutorial and one the steps says duplicate my layer 2 times and change the bottom layer to black and the top layer to white.
My question is how do i change a layer to a certain color after its been duplicated?
