Subject: looking fo Running water stream or creek tex

shante ( ) posted Wed, 15 October 2008 at 7:50 PM · edited Tue, 20 August 2024 at 2:59 PM

Hi all. First time I think I have posted here.
I am working on a photograph shooting a model in the woods. She will be standing on a rock in the middle of a creek with water flowing around the rock and rain falling no her as she stands there. For the obvious reasons this is going to cause a problem trying to shoot it live so I have to get the elements in place to add the rain, the flowing creek water and possibly the rock so I can add them in post. Any idea where I can find the texture for the flowing creek water? The creek bed is going to be dry without a doubt so I will need the water flow very badly to carry this project off.   :)

www.cgtextures.com - on the left side menu you will see a subject heading of "Water".
In that set are waterfalls, as well as foamy water, etc.
Unless you have an account, there is a 15MB download limit per day (every 24hrs). This is not a big deal - you can actually download a significant amount of images per day - they are jpegs with a decent quality to filesize compression.

Check out stock photo sites - some are pretty cheap if it is for personal useage. Try www.istockphoto.com for cheap rates and decent sized images. You can find a good picture of a waterfall, mossy rocks you can use, etc.

Just for giggles, do you have the photo you are working on, and are you in a position to upload it here (this is a good portion of what I do for a living, so I might be able to throw some other thoughts your way if I can see it)?

When it comes to making it look like dripping water on her skin, there is a great Layer Style made by Burt Monroy (a PS genius!) that for the life of me I can't remember right now. Looks awesome - VERY realistic and pathetically simple to paint onto a picture.

Hope this helps-
-Lew ;-)

Thanks for the link
The shot is not done yet. Still coordinating it. The model is pretty much set and we are going over the dress and props and makeup. I may be able to find a good set of plastic/rubber/fiberglass garden stones/rocks at a local garden shop or home depot. Also found some good ones in a gardening catalog. My back is too frelled to try moving any real rocks around for this. :(

I have several rain prop overlays I have used pretty successfully in the past so I will be falling back onto that for the "Rain" in the image.

The only thing I need is that darn stream./creek rushing water. If the shot had been done in the spring I would have had rushing water in the creek. But then I would not have had the lush vegetation of the trees and woods in the background. Even the water splashing against the rocks is something I have covered even though I know how to paint that in anyway but the details will be important in this.

The model will be sprayed with either baby oil or lanolin and then an wet down with an atomizer on bare skin and free flowing water to her dress to drench it properly to make it all look she is actually standing in the rain. So no other FX will be needed to fake skin water drops.

As long as she is on an uneven surface - doesn't have to be "rocks" per se - you can place rocks underneath her feet and cast the appropriate shadows on them to make it believable.

Forgot to ask about whether or not she was going to have a wet-down for the shoot - occurred to me after I posted. Awesome - way to think ahead.

Yeah - I did a shot of an Excalibur sword for a catalog company that was in rocks in a stream with a small waterfall behind it assembled from about 6-8 photos including the sword. Various rocks were resized, shadows adjusted, moss painted on and overlaid with other shots of moss, etc.

I think they got them from www.photos.com because they (the catalog company) have a subscription to that site.

Good luck and have fun with this!

Forgot!  I'm not sure I understand what it is you want to do so if I'm way off forgive me...   I have a gallery on DeviantArt where I offer some stock photos of rocks, boulders etc, there may even be some more of running waters in there...  Check in Miscelleanous and Landscapes...

Beautiful works from both of you but what I need is a good crisp image of just the water flow. The scene will be a wood scene live with the model already in it. I just need water image to superimpose over the dried creek bed. Thanks for your ideas and response.

When I'm looking for a texture or an image, the first place I go to is Flickr. Millions of images, many of them good. And most creative commons, so free for use. Generally, if a photographer doesn't want you to use the image, they'll add a note to that effect. Go to flickr's home page and you'll find a search box. Just enter what you want and then wade through 1000s of images. It's never failed me yet.

I forgot to mention that many of the images on flickr are available in high rez, which is why it's the first place I look. when you open the image, in a new page preferably, you'll see a link above the image that says all sizes. I've gotten images for textures that are up to 4000X4000 or so.
