i NEED a city for my Webcomic.... not only a 2 block grungy alley... BUT a huge NY/like city, full of streets, lights, modern buildings!...

so i found this..... http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/max-new-york-city-buildings/417102
(among many others)

Questions and notes:

  • Im ONLY using PoserPro (8)... and Photoshop for postwork....
  • can i but one of those cities like.... .LWO or .3Ds and export it into PoserPro and work with it?????
  • can i light those scenes? add my characters like any Stonemason block?
  • Can i export to PoserPro ANY .LWO archive?

Im using Mac... just in case... lol...
Thanks my friends!!

Since you're obviously talking about a night scene, I would think that you might do better and cheaper using an aerial stock photo of New York textured to a flat plane, and then use it as a background prop, or layer it in, in your paint program.  I only say this, because while you can GET free city block objects from various 3d sites, such as those that cater to 3ds Max, etc., how are you going to simulate all the lights in the windows and such. -the moving traffic in the streets, etc.
If it were a scene depicting mid-day, then one or two infinite lights, or eve global, lighting sets could simulate the sunlight shining from above at an angle, but a night scene with hundreds of lit windows....
Therefore, I'd say, get a photo, generate from it a displacement and bump map, and use a flat square or plane.

The city is also in Wavefront .OBJ format, which is Posers native format. No problem on import. But be advised that Poser uses a scale that's different from usual, the files will import as HUGE.

Since you're on a Mac, the easiest route to fix that is not available: Objaction Scaler (here in freestuff). A .OBJ scaling tool that runs on Mac may exist, but I don't know of any.

Another way would be downloading a trial version of Lightwave or Maya (not Max, that's PC only), load the cityscape, and export as Wavefront .OBJ at the desired scale.
I'm also not sure whether Lightwave or Maya have free evaluation versions, and how functional those evaluation versions are. A 3DS Max trial version is fully functional, but only for 30 days. Alas, PC only...

Online Now!

dphoadley has a point.  Importing such huge sets will put considerable strain on your system if your intent is to finally render in Poser.  But to answer your question, yes you can import .lwo and .3ds objects into Poser and export them just the same.

Another option - less pricey and FAR more versatile: Vue 7 Infinite (www.e-onsoftware.com).
It'll allow you to RENDER a city that complicated and large. Including dozens of lights, dozens or even hundreds of people, and full landscapes.
It also renders significantly faster than Poser.

Vue 7 imports Poser characters very well.

Building your city from various elements will be quite the undertaking. But once you have it, you can reuse the scene time and again, from different camera angles, with different lights and skies, you name it.

Hi HBorre & Svdl!..... thanks for your help!
In fact im considering trying Vue7... i love those landscapes.... i was on that forum asking about Vue7 Complete which is like 800 dls.... and the one here at Rendo... im a little confuse about the difference.. many users there seems to have some problems with Vue7... so they recommend me Vue6...

anyway i think i will get a demo and see.... same as carrara looks pretty cool... but i guess it only works for landscaping... i guess...

Having just completed a 10 month course in 3ds Max, I've learned that not everything need be modeled in detail, when a texture can do the same job easier, cheaper, and quicker!
