Subject: Realistic skin

Qasar ( ) posted Wed, 28 January 2009 at 10:31 AM · edited Wed, 08 January 2025 at 6:03 AM

Hi,
I would like to know what is the best realistic skin for V4 I can find or buy. I don't have a lot of time, so I prefer to concentrate on the picture composition and lightning than on texturing.
Thank you for any help

My advice: look up the VSS Skin Shader thread (warning - long and technical read). There's a couple of freebies in there that can turn just about any texture map into a stunningly realistic one under almost any lighting condition. Plus a lot of info on how to set up lights in Poser, how to implement gamma correction, and more.

Not a full "one-click" solution, but it's not all that hard to use.

As far as I know, there's no skin for V4 for sale that incorporates even a tenth of the material node magic that Bagginsbill has put into his free shader. As an extra bonus, VSS works for ANY human Poser figure, not just for V4.

Svdl is right on the mark on this one.  I am a follower of the VSS Prop system developed by Bagginsbill and it is top-notch.  And the nice thing about it, it's free!  Technically, it is not just a Skin Shader system, it's application could be applied to just about any prop, object or model once it is full developed.  But, in the meantime, it is a WIP with many devoted followers.

The thread is rather extensive and will take a little time to absorb, but it is worth reading and experimenting.  Although you can use it with any human figure and texture, I have managed to create my own VSS Prop to shade the Nybras demon from DAZ.

Sorry to not agree but shaders are a lot of work. If time is the issue then go for the hi res textures..

Elite @Daz,, Morris, Ceridwen here. I'm sure there are more. The V4 skin shader by face_off is an easy to use skinshader ready to go. No reading required... Also at Daz.

It is also the skin standard for poser. It's all I use.

Attached: full preview of super heavy "Lana".. not even a render yet.. These skins are not perfect. Most have specular baked on, shadows still there,,, even "sss" where it should not be. Later, with time you can paint your own pics right onto V4 as some do here. Easy to do with new softwares like 3D coat...

Some good recommendations in the posts above.  I'd also recommend the free VSS (See the thread in this forum.) even though I have some problems getting it to work for me.  (Probably my issue alone.)  BaginsBill knows his stuff.

I'd also recommend the Elite texture/shader packs over at Daz.  They're really good out of the box.  The V4 Realism kit is a good easy python settings-and-one-click shader solution as well.

IMO, as long as you have a "decent" skin texture, you can fiddle with it and do a good job on your lighting and it will be just fine.  IMO, the differences between "good" and "great" aren't really noticeable until you start doing close-up work.  If you're not doing a lot of close-ups, then your lighting is going to be much more important than the base texture.

NOTE: Just to add, a few vendors consistently seem to have excellent textures.  RebelMommy,   Thorne/Sarsa/et al., Danie/Morfino  .. I am sure there are others but these are the only ones I have experience with that really stick out in my mind.

I bought a lot of MaskEdit products and the textures
are super great. They come in a range of different shades
and load great. The prices are good too. The V4 set worked
super. You can get them right here in the store.

Face_Off's Product works very well on V3 & V4, for sure.

If you have a texture you really like you can use Real Skin shader on top of your texture.

I used it in many renders like this example of V3 W/ Luna Texture by Aery Soul, [ CLICK ME

T](http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1811285)he biggest hurdle with getting skin to look right is in the Lighting.

Thanks to all for your answers.
I will look at tha one click product you mentionned, and see if they fit my requirements (in fact, I'm looking for a photorealistic result) and also I tried to find the VSS thread, but I was unable to find the begining or any download link. So if you could help with a link?
I understand it could seems lazy, but it always a question of time available...
Thank you again for your help

Qasar, I am also a VSS fan(antic). Start of 57 page thread is www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php

The prop and a nice condensed version of  operating instructions are found at:
poserbagginsbill.googlepages.com/vsshomepage

The latest Skin Shader material can be found here:
sites.google.com/site/bagginsbill/free-stuff/random-shaders

Also, key to realism is Gamma Correction. If you're using Poser Pro, you have this feature
The Skin Shader discussed above includes a material based version which should work in P6 and P7. Not sure about P5, may not have some of the required Nodes?

HI,
Thanks for this. In fact I bought maskedit texture and realskin shader. Here is the result without any tuning just basic lighting (which is grey)
