Subject: WHERE do Daz Studio users prefer thier DS MAT poses should be packed up in a Run

sixus1 ( ) posted Mon, 20 July 2009 at 12:25 PM · edited Sat, 04 January 2025 at 3:04 PM

I currently put the DS MATs in the Pose directory (Runtime:Pose:Cerberus:DSMATS:actual MATS here).

This is apparently incorrect because they are visible to Poser users.  So, where do you prefer that they are located in a zipped up runtime ????

Thanks,

hhmmm i haven't opened up cerebus yet maybe i should lol see if they show up since i only use daz

brb i think lol

mishamcm ( ) posted Mon, 20 July 2009 at 12:40 PM

You should put them in the Pose directory in the same subfolder as the corresponding Poser mats, with the same filenames as the Poser mats.  D|S will use the .ds/.dsa/.dsb/.dse instead of the .pz2, while Poser users won't see them.  The location you give (Runtime:Pose:Cerberus:DSMATS:actual MATS here) won't work -- I assume you meant Runtime:Libraries:Pose etc.

Actually, in that version, I was missing a png file, so they won't.

I'm old fashioned.  I like my DS MATS folder structure to point to the Content directory.  I HATE having the DS mats mixed in with the Poser mats, hate it!!

I always make a new folder, name it and then pull the DS MATS out and move them to the new folder, copy the PNG's over and then move the folder to the appropriate Content area.

well i found them no problem but they didn't load like normal and when i just tried rendering i got a render error so i'm not sure what the prob may be in that respect but i do get the mats without picture icons in the folder you have them in.  and it loaded in less than a minute

Yeah, that is what I meant.  Its been a long day already....and I am fustrated.

Well, That is sorta where I put them, they are located thusly:
:Runtime:Libraries:Pose:Cerberus:DSMAT:

I guess the problem that I am having with the testing here is that there aren't any Poser MAT files.  It is a package for Poser 6 and up, so I included Material files in the Material folder.

So, the tester is telling me to put the files somewhere else so that they don't show up in Poser since they don't work in Poser.  I kinda thought that the folder labled DSMATS was self explanatory.  But now I have to move them somewhere else....so, where would that be ????

Stuff like this makes me not want to pack for multiple program compatibility.....

Thanks,
Rebekah

Sorry, I need to get an update out to those that bought the Cerberus and are DS users.....the MATs need to be updated slightly for you.

So, what I am to understand....two DS users....two different preference ?

Joy, another situation where only half of the people can be pleased.

I'm sorry it's giving you grief Rebekah but us DS users to appreciate the effort.  Keep in mind that it's on both sides of the fence.  I make freebies and setting things up for the Poser users is a royal pain in the ass but I do it cause I like to share with both camps, not just the DAZ Studio users!! 😉

yeah we do appreciate it that's for sure.   I'm one of those that really don't care where they are as long as I don't have to see the cannot find xyz texture in zyx file path cause one name or another is changed from how it was saved. I also make freebies and well being limited on my knowledge I usually end up just doing the pz2's and not ds mats cause I don't really understand the ds mats.

RAMWolf: Where is it that you like yours to be ?  You mentioned the Content directory, but that is vague for me.  I've opened up and checked things in DS, but not much more beyond that....I get a lot of errors from the actual program that make it hard to use, but when it does...the renders are beautiful.

Les (sixus1) and I are really trying to get a good grasp on DS, so that we can please those users as well....and between DS, and about 6 different versions of Poser....different brokerages prefer just about everything different....different OS having issues with different shit...I am about to simply spit.

thanks for the input and help.
Rebekah

Just my two cents, but I always put my Daz Studio mats in this directory:

DazStudiocontentmaterialsMBAYmats

Most Daz users will change them to where they like them, but at least here I know they'll work.

well here's a render of the demon dog mat for ds done in ds3adv i had to adjust the gossiness to about 60% and the displacement to about 80% but hey,  it cane out nicely just where it is

I've been told that this (above) is actually the correct directory structure for DS mats.  When I used to put them elsewhere, my users all carped at me about it till I went back and redid them in that structure sequence.

You shouldn't be including the DazStudio/content/ in the path - that's the equivalent of the Poser n folder. You want to start the path in the zip with the first folder inside the Content folder (or whatever folder you use as a content dirctory, it doesn't have to be called Content.

There are two places you can put materials presets - on their own, in a folder outside the Runtime folder - something like CreaturesS1Mbeastiename for instance, which would be RAMWolff's choice - or in a folder in one of the Runtimelibraries folders - presumably RuntimelibrariesPoseS1Mbeastiename or the like - with a Poser library file (which can be an empty placeholder if your Poser settings are in the Material library) so that it visible in DS (when there's a script with the same name as a Poser file, DS loads the script instead of the Poser file) which can be more convenient when you are in the Poser content folder to get the figure initially. Of course, since they are small files you can do both - the files themselves are the same either way, there's no editing required.**

hum, to jump in here I'm a bit confused...

I'm new to D/S but I'm trying to make my new project suitable for both programs. So if I'm including Mat files that are prepared for Poser and a set prepared for D/S you want them placed in a seperate zip file that can be extracted to the D/S content folders as well as one that can extract to the Poser runtime? I mean since not everyone has these two programs in the same location you would need to seperate zips. Does that mean having geometry files, Cr2s etc all duplicated as well? With Rendo's system of charging more depending on the number of zip files a product contains this could cause the price go up.

Since only the the Mat files are truely different I thought that adding those files to the appropriate Pose folder would suffice and still keep th package smaller, but now I'm not so sure... Or would it be better to sell a Poser version with the files formated for poser and a D/S version formated for that program so tha the user would have their choice?

TheHalfdragon ( ) posted Tue, 21 July 2009 at 5:03 PM

well from someone who uses many daz and poser mats(in daz)  when i see a nat file as a freebie and there is a content folder (contains the file paths for the daz mats) and a runtime ( with the file paths for the poser mats) i usually extract it to a neutral location and slide the runtime folder into the content folder then slide the whole thing into daz

just makes it easier for me to find things in my opinion

RHaseltine ( ) posted Wed, 22 July 2009 at 8:35 AM

You wouldn't need to duplicate the mesh, textures (unless you included 16-bit per channel tiffs for DS displacement) or figure/prop files in any event. As TheHalfdragon says, it's pretty common to include both the PeopleVictoria 4clothingproduct name (or whatever) tree and the Poser Runtime in the same zip and allow the user to place the files where desired - indeed, the user may want to keep them together, since it's perfectly OK to have a folder selected as both Poser and DS content directory (but as I said earlier, don't include the Content folder in your path). You can do that whether or not you also put DS presets in the Pose library folder to load instead of the Poser files.
