Subject: Multiple versions installed, any reason?

Jcleaver ( ) posted Sat, 29 May 2010 at 10:24 PM · edited Mon, 13 January 2025 at 6:07 AM

I have several versions of Poser installed.  Is there any logical reason to keep more than my PoserPro 2010 installed?

only if there's something or some content that doesn't work in the latest version...or you just need more hard drive space...;)

For testing content you want to work in older versions?

Only reason I still keep P6 around.

I keep Poser 5 loaded because some older Python scripts only work in that version, and because it will export multiple props as one .obj without adding numeric suffixes to all of the groups and materials.  Other than that, I never use it.

There are potential uses for older versions, but whether they're worth keeping probably depends on what you do with Poser.

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

The main thing i do is use Poser to set up scenes to be rendered by Vue Infinite; so the main concern is that PoserPro is recognized by Vue Infinite.  Since i have several older versions of Poser installed, I don't know what would happen if I got rid of all but Poserpro.

The main reason I am thinking of dropping the older versions does have to do with python scripts.  I might have one installed on another version, say Poser 7; and forget that i never installed it in Poserpro.  Then I pull out my hair looking for it in the wrong place.

Disk space is not an issue.  I'll probably just keep the others just in case, and just treat the Poserpro install as the only one I actually use.

I have versions from Poser 8 all the way back to Poser 4 spread across my laptop and a big external hard drive.  Why, you might ask? I don't rightly know. I've moved some things across from version to version, but not all of it.

My setup is the same as Latexluv's. I have all versions from Poser 4 and upwards (except the two latest "pro" versions which I haven't got) and I use them for various things. Some of PhilC's python programs, like OBJ2CR2 is installed in an earlier version and running it from Poser 8 gives me a "this is not registred" error. And since it's easier to just fire up the older version than to look for the installation zips on my cd's... I do that rather than reinstall it L I'm lazy that way.

I've also sometimes used Poser 4 to strip out stuff like the Center of Mass thingies. The good thing about Poser is that even older versions can open new files, and whatever it doesn't understand, it just skips. That makes Poser amazingly backwards compatible.

If you a have lots of RAM you can set up a scene in the older version whist PP 2010 is rendering...

Oh, I still use Poser Pro for setting up a scene. For me, Poser 8 is pretty much a render engine. I have only installed my collection of Bagginsbill's shaders and his VSS and Environment Sphere into Poser 8. But I did start doing some consolidation last night. Two-thirds of what was in Poser 6 is now integrated into Poser 7.
