BB, I'm trying to get a realistic glossy effect for the lipstick on my latest character.  I love the VSS but it doesn't give me the look that I want for the lips alone.

Right now I'm creating MAT poses in P7 so I'm posting a pic of the character and then I'll follow with my shader nodes.

TIA

Now, here's my shader node set up ... I need help with this.

There are a couple ways to do this, but here's my suggestion.

Get or make a lip mask. This needs to identify where the lips are in the UV map, with white or close to white on the lips, and black everywhere else.

You'll want to apply this to the lip and face material zones. You have two choices:

1) Do this after synchronizing. This is the quickest way. The down side is that you'll have to do it again and again if you're doing a lot of parameter tweaking and re-synchronizing.

2) Using VSS Designer, add a new Template Face material to the control prop. Load the skin shader in it. Change the Shader Rules to map the face and lips to Copy Template Face.

Either way, make the changes shown in the screen shot.

I'm connecting the lip mask to Value_2 of the PM:Bump and PM:Shine. I've added .05 inches of bump, and 1.5 more shine where the lip mask enables it.

Play with different values.

Render coming up.

This is before the above change. Note: This lip texture has burned-in speculars, which are going to somewhat ruin the effect, but it's what I have, so I can't demonstrate a better result.

Anyway, this is before.

Note: I'm using the lip mask I got with the GND4 texture set. But I'm using the Daz standard textures otherwise.

BB, thanks so much, this was exactly what I needed.  The only difference is that I plugged Value_2 of the PM:Shine Level, also, into the lip mask and gave it a value of .45 and I got exactly the look I wanted for all 10 of the lip images.

I bow to the skill of the Jedi Shader Master!

Yes that's a good thing to do. See, the level of shine in this shader is driven by the specular map, if you have one. But if you don't have a specular map, the red component of the color map is used instead. Depending on what that color actually is, you have to tune the level to respond to what is found in the color map. Boosting the level is perfectly valid to calibrate it for a particular texture set.

Good job. Looks great.

Not being a node guru, I so can't figure out how to do this, BB.  If you could post some screenshots for me, I'd love you forever because the results I showed you earlier are something I want to do for all of my lady characters.

To get you started, the VSS Designer button is found on the Python Script patette.

bagginsbill ( ) posted Thu, 03 June 2010 at 7:39 PM

It's easier for me to just make it. Which are you using with or without AO in the skin template?

@BB ... with AO

@hborre ... found the designer button but couldn't figure it out.  Not a node wizard but I'll look at what BB does for me and learn from that.

Thanks, Guys.  I appreciate the help with this.

Shall I include a Blender node to let you change the lip color, too?

While waiting for Bagginsbill's response, check out pages 38-41 of the giant thread "VSS Skin Test - Opinions".  On these pages Bagginsbill and RobynsVeil show us how to create masks for lips and eye makeup.  Here's the link to page 38:

Well, I tried to add a Lip Template to the VSS control Prop. It looked like I had done it. I saved the prop. However, when I actually ran the VSS python, it did not add the changes I had made to the Lip Template, so I have somehow done this wrong.  If anyone has succeeded in adding a Lip Template to the VSS control prop, could you please post your VSS prop as a zip file, please? I am beyond frustrated at this point.

BB is building the appropriate prop for this right now because I couldn't figure it out, either.

Stay tuned to this thread for the results.

Did you auto-rename the Template after you set it up?  I found if you skip that step, it doesn't apply the shaders.

Latexluv ( ) posted Sat, 05 June 2010 at 7:10 PM

Yes, I used the Auto Rename after I set up the Template. Maybe I did it wrong. Once I had the Template for Lips added, I copied and pasted the Skin Template, which I then made some modifications too. I then Auto Renamed. However, it did not rename the Specular Map in the set up. When I ran it. It applied the skin Template to the lip area but without the modifications I had made to that Template. So I do not know where I went wrong.

Okay, I don't know how I just got it to work, but I did and I'm saving the VSS prop right away!

Another trick in using Auto Rename feature, plug the image node you would like to rename directly to the Root node, or PoserSurface, click the button and, afterwards, reconnect it into it's finally arrangement.

I'm working on modifications right now. I like the glossy lip stick styles. I don't like matt lipstick or make ups. I used to be a Cosmetic Manager at a drugstore, and I know that make up styles and colors cycle very frequently and I always hated it when "Mat style is IN this year". I liked glossy, shinny, and metallics.

For Victoria Lee. I'm posting the VSS prop that I just managed to add a Lip Template to along with my modifications. You can use this until Bagginsbill can get back to us on this thread.  It utilizes a Mask that Robinsveil posted in the VSS thread. I'm going to post it here for you as well. Please try this out and see if it works on your system. So far seems to be working fine on mine.
