Many parts allow to mix and match freely, so it's a better choice of the two, although prop that loads all the stuff at once without too much clicking isn't too bad either ;)

I agree with Aphonso and bobbystahr on this one.
At the very minimum, make separate material zones, especially if part of it consists of walls and floors. I have one prop that I used multiple times to get a big enough backdrop by making the floor/wall portion invisible. It is one .obj, but two material zones.
Also try to remember to name everything. I know sometimes I'm lazy and forget as well. Having pieces of a model named Cube_24 or Cylinder_16 is pretty useless in figuring out what they are. It becomes a bigger problem as a model grows more complex.
And try to keep a naming convention in mind:
Like (objectname)(Front/Back)(Left/Right). Object name should be first, since many apps tend to sort alphabetically. (Or at least have the option.) So if you named a wheel on a car "Wheel_F_L", it will be with all the wheels and likely before "Wheel_F_R" on the list. If you did "Left" first on the part name, you'll be looking through a list of everything that's on the left side of your model. If you have lots of identical bits, numbers after the name are fine too. If you can, try to keep the numbering sequence in line with where they are spacially. Note that I use "back" instead of "rear" when doing this, since when abbreviating to a single letter it's easy enough to confuse which R is right or rear.

When putting a model in the free stuff would downloadrs prefer the model to be as a single unified prop, or to leave it loose?
I was thinking as I am doing my latest model that it has many parts and maybe people would prefer to rearrange the parts or save them as a seperate prop for use elsewhere
