Subject: Poser 8 creating files that are not there

HotDog36 ( ) posted Fri, 13 August 2010 at 6:54 PM · edited Sat, 03 August 2024 at 5:43 PM

I just recently upgraded to Poser 8 on a computer with Windows 7. My issue is that whenever I export an .obj file, Poser crashes when I try to import it back in. The weird thing is that every file I create with Poser is not visible in the folder directory outside of Poser, even library items. When I bring up the import dialogue box inside Poser, the object is there in the folder, but outside of Poser it isn't there at all and even the folder properties does not acknowledge the files' existence. And every one of these files in the import dialogue box has a little pad lock icon in the bottom corner of the file icon picture. I have read that this is some kind of file sharing feature, but I can't fix the problem. I can shut down Poser and reload it, and still use the created library items, but I can't load the .obj. Poser says these files exist, but Windows says they don't. Has anyone else encountered this?

I bet you installed Poser in Program Files? In that case, the files will be in the Virtual Store thingie (which I've only ever heard about since 1: I use Vista. 2. I have disabled UAC. 3. I never EVER install anything into Program Files.

But i bet that's why. The fiels are there, but in a protected folder that only Windows knows how to find...

Best bet is to reinstall Poser with the option at the bottom "for when you're using an external drive" (can't remember the exact workding) that will allow you to put Poser whereever YOU please and not where Bill Gates thinks you want to put it ;)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. :glare: Is reinstalling it really the only way to fix this?

You can move the Folders from Virtual Store back to where you want them in Program Files, but it will happen again. The best bet is to reinstall with the Content in a Shared Folder and only the Program in Program Files Folder.

That is the default option. The last option is for if you keep your Content on another location (I use that because I use Network Drives.)

Which area of the computer would be the best place to reinstall Poser? I wouldn't want to accidentally install it in a similar place and have to do this again. Is there anyway I can just make the Poser folder a shared folder, and if so would that eliminate this mess? I am not in a position where I need to worry about security because I am the only user and the computer is never connected to the internet.

Create your Poser folder on the core drive (i.e., C:Poser).  Guaranteed, no more problems with Vista or Windows 7 security.

On WIndows 7, do you have a 64bit or 32bit, if you have 64 bit you will see 2 program files?

You can avoid installing the second icon during setup in 64-bit.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I have tried disabling UAC with limited success. It will actually display the files, but it is still a little buggy on loading them. Maybe I will try installing directly to C:.

I would install it on the Program Files (default) and let Poser install the Content to the Shared. I would avoid creating a Folder on the Root of the Drive. Windows 7 does not like that either.

since when.........?
there is zero problems doing that. seriously....!

Khai-J-Bach ( ) posted Sat, 14 August 2010 at 3:54 PM

that had me puzzled. John, you reffering to the problem in Windows 7 32bit RC 1 build 7100 where the permissions for folders written off the Root was not completely written causing non Admins to have issues using said folders?

that was fixed in the next build. and 7100 is no longer in use (unless it's been hacked) since it timed out some time ago...

it's no longer an issue. Win7 has no problems using user created folders off Root.

I am in agreement with Kaibach.

When I asked MS, they said installation of Programs at the Root Level is not recommended and you may encounter unexpected errors. This was for Windows 7 64. This was in June. I did not ask why, but I also believe if you have UAC off this is not an issue, but they also do not recommend turning UAC off either, and if you use the default installation for Poser 8 or Poser Pro *(Shared Folders for Content) you also will not have issues.

and my information is also from MS. and I have UAC ON.

sorry John, I just don't know what to think about this. since you say one thing, and experience and Technet says otherwise.

on balance, I am really losing faith in the tech-support for poser over this.

For the benefit of anyone following the thread who doesn't know where to find the missing stuff,  navigate to where they should be, and look up in the window's title bar for this little icon - "compatibility files".  Click on it to go to your missing stuff.
