Subject: New Figure Issue

DarksealStudios ( ) posted Sun, 14 November 2010 at 4:32 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 3:43 AM

Hi All,

I'm making a new figure and my poser 8 has been giving me LOADS of trouble (see other posts)... So, I am trying to finish this figure up in poser 6. But, the cr2 I made is from p8 cause thats where I did all the rigging when I made the figure.

My issue is this: Poser keeps breaking up my obj file in places it's not meant to be. I have gone over the obj tons of times, checked the verts to make sure I dont have holes, I've reimported the obj and used the same cr2 as a doner file, I have done everythin EXPEPT reRIG........ Does anyone have a suggestion of what I can do BESIDES re-RIG?

I'll post a few shots so you can see what I mean. I used a cartoon screenshot cause this shows off the breakage the best.

Here is a FRESH OBJ import. You can clearly see the seperation of the body parts.

Here is after I use the doner cr2 made in Poser 8. Everything is still awesome...

Here is the horror I find after restarting poser 6. The figure had been saved to the library and brought out to the stage after reopening the program. You can now clearly see breakage in the mesh, polygons are missing (seen best when I export this new obj from poser) and pieces of parts are now belonging to other body parts.

Of course if I can't figure it out in a day I'll just re-rig.... I just hate rigging............and would like another solution. If anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative! Thank you in advance!

How did you group this?  It looks to me as if you let Poser's auto group feature do it?  If so, that's the problem, Poser's auto grouper tends to leave islands of polys in the wrong bone's group and gives this kind of result.  If you grouped it by hand (which I'd always recommend) then something else is going on.

I grouped it myself outside poser, in maya...... strange huh? I need to know why!!? I guess I'll be forced to rerig. I am having tons  of issues with p8, chalk this up to a poser 8 bug in the 8.1.0 version....(i cant use sr3, other freezing issues for no good reason)

I doubt you need to redo the rig, let me see a copy of the CR2/OBJ if you don't mind (see PM for my email).

edit: the OBJ written out by Poser as well as the OBJ from your modeler, both (I bet Poser mangled your grouping somehow).

Some of that surface looks like the normals aren't facing the right (same) way? Just seeing it from a Blender-user's viewpoint.

Good point, although Poser shouldn't ever play with normal facing it's worth checking also.

It's not the normals..... poser DELETED the polys. PJ, I'll send you the stuff.

PJZ is the man. My maya and zbrush missed it. PZJ, Thanks a million. You've saved my so much time rerigging only to find I would have still had a problem!

Shucks I thought I was a crusty arrogant son of a bitch, you have redeemed my faith in my own awesomeness and stuff.  Have fun :)

Oops I need to apologize a bit - this problem was not anything to do with Poser.

So I think the rigging is done. I think some of the breakage in the leg came from one of my bones being parented incorrectly. I misnamed my shin and thigh, and when I switched the naming on one side, i forgot to switch it on the other. It's all sorted out I think!

So far all of this is with bones. No morphs yet. I think I'll do that next. A few facial morphs, need the eyes to open and close...etc... I think rigging as much as you can is the way to go with figures. At least with non human figures.

I think I'm going to add a freebie with it but not sure what to include. Like something to go with him, a prop, ... maybe a flame like i did with another figure (rex), or maybe... hmmm

Some conformers of different types would probably attract extra interest, that's always a common demand about third party figures.

Conforming clothing, clothing rigged for the character to wear... As for morphs, Maya calls them "blendshapes".
