Subject: Shadow Strength

MNArtist ( ) posted Tue, 28 February 2012 at 8:09 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 8:04 PM

I've been trying to find info on this, and can't locate anything.

What drives the ability to change the shadow strength under a light parameter? This is for an infinite light. It seems like sometimes I can change it, and sometimes it's locked at 1.000, and no matter what I change under Properties, it can't be increased. Then other times it changes. I can't figure out the "rhyme or reason" to this. Does anyone know what the "rules" are for this? It doesn't seem to matter if I'm using Ray Trace or Depth map, though for the most part, I'm using Ray Trace shadows. Also, changing the blur radius doesn't seem to impact the ability.

I'm on Poser9 on Windows.

Any info is appreciated.

It may be this:  right side of shadow thumb wheel small arrow-click on it and check your settings--ensure that the minimum is not set at 1.  Normally minimum is set at 0 and maximum is set at 1.  If both of the values are the same, the dial has no effect.  Jan

Thanks, Plutom. I have done that. I guess I was just trying to figure out why the default limits set as they do.

Is it working the way you want it to now?

Probably because the limits of 0 and 1 are the ones that 98 percent of the folks use.

I've never brought shadow values below below 0 which could bring very interesting results.  BB had an explanation of the results, but I forgot. Hmmm going to give it a try and see what happens....Jan

Yeah, I'll be able to get there this way. Just so strange the way the limits change. Really appreciate your help!!

Hi Misty, yeah, it sure does...tried it, additionally, boosting shadowing beyond 100 percent gives you that Grim Reaper type of blackness....Jan
