Subject: Making a 3D Object From a 2D Image

DOSHL ( ) posted Thu, 26 April 2012 at 3:49 PM · edited Sun, 19 January 2025 at 2:02 PM

Is there software or techniques available that can be used to take a 2D image - a photo of a truck for example - and help transform it into a 3D object?

Yes. With a 3d printer, you can take any photo, and prefectly replicate any object in full 3d. The technology is amazing, and surprisingly inexpensive.

Zbrush, 3DCoat, BlackSmith 3D

u can do this with them, literally :,

'''''take a photo of a truck for example - and help transform it into a 3D object'''

but as for printing, zbrush & 3dcoat have links in their forums for printing companies

here's one link for 3d printing :

oh these make 3d prototypes it looks like. I saw one of these machines. make anything up to about a foot I think. these are physical objects. if the question is - is there a program that can take a 2 d image to make a 3d image I haven't found one yet except doing it the old fasion way like shown inthe books using the photes as models to make your 3d model. I'd like to find one save a lot of work.  unless the machine creates a 3d model in the process of making the prototype does it do this? I was thinking of sending in a couple of characters I've been wanting to make into a 3d character or toy. soemthing I could take to a plastic molding company. looks like this takes a 3d model and makes a 3d prototype.

I don't think any of these replies address the OP's intended question.

There is a program called Archipelis (http://www.archipelis.com/) that will let you form 3D objects from animals and basic things in your photos.  Doesn't look like it would work very well on something like a truck though...

There are also a number of programs which can convert 2D stills into an object.  All of them require multiple photos to accomplish this, and no program seems to be very good at dealing with the things it cannot see.

Many 3D programs will let you place images in your front and side views for reference as you model.  You'll still need to know how to model though.

Here are some possible solutions - they all require multiple photos, Photomodeler may be your best bet for a truck model - but it's not free.

You can do very basic ones using Building Maker in sketchup. Though really you want the kinda apps dustrider mentions. For the science use the link above. Also, and one for the oldies here :) , anyone remember Canoma? Some of the ones poserworld did worked quite well. http://poserworld.com/Downloads/Misc/9093/Pack.of.seven.Canoma.scenes.aspx

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.
