There was a spate of sketchbook threads in the Poser forum recently, and I've enjoyed reading about the efforts of some of the big names in our field. I won't be starting a sketchbook thread, since I don't have anything as grand as a sketchbook - but I do have a big odds-and-ends box.

I haven't released much new stuff for a while. Things that have been announced on my site recently have been other people's work rather than my own. It isn't because I haven't been busy, but my work methods have changed over the years. Building my own Poser content is no longer such a big deal. I'll slap something together quickly, finish it only as far as necessary for the project I wanted it for, then chuck it into a metaphorical cardboard box. I realise that other people could make use of these things too, but very often the amount of work that it would take to finish the thing, or to explain how to use it, would be much more than that involved in making it in the first place.

Anyway, motivated by guilt, the upcoming season of goodwill, or whatever, I've decided to put a little effort into dusting off some of these forgotten projects and releasing them. They may not be to my usual standards, whatever they may be. There will be things like clothing for older characters (chiefly Victoria 3) that may not fit all that well; there will be props that you may have to put a little effort into working out how to use. I'm currently testing some additions to the QuickDress range which will be the first things released.

Subscribe to this thread and you'll be notified when something new is emptied out of my box. Use it in the spirit in which it is offered, ask for help if you need it, and above all... Enjoy!

Please know this.  A lot of us do not know how to make things and we all have things that we have to work with and on, it is part of the art.  Any and all that you make and post will be most welcomed if not by all then by me.  So if it needs a little tweeking   all the better 'couse it will bring out the best is us.

Good on y man...will keep watching..clear out the trash to make room for new trash...I do this often but my clearing mostly goes to the trash as the stuff in the box is mostly irrelevant by the time it hits cardboard....

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Welcome, subscribers! What a lot of you there are, to be sure, and thanks for the kind words. As promised, I'm going to kick off with some QuickDresses. I made these a while ago but they never turned out right. Now, going back to them, and intending to release them in whatever half-functional state they may be, they ended up working better than they ever had before. These probably count as proper releases, not odds 'n' ends. Isn't that always the way?

A3QuickDress.zip (254KB) - QuickDress for Aiko 3, including a Realistic morph.

G2FQuickDress.zip (238KB) - for the G2 females: P7's Sydney, Jessi G2, and Olivia.

KQuickDress.zip (261KB) - for Kirwyn's K, or either version of KEZ. This one doesn't fit quite as well as the others; there's a very small pokethrough, but it's easy to fix.

Hopefully these should inspire further freebies - and so the joy keeps going around...

Quote - I did get them but so so so sad  we who only use DAZ3d cannot use them.  So I will hide in my sad lil puter and weep.

I know you said you don't make things, and the QuickDresses wouldn't be any use to a DAZ|Studio user unless they were going to make their own conforming clothing. The QuickDress props themselves should work in D|S - it's just that the results aren't much use without further work. To be fair, the same is true in Poser, although there is less follow-up work required.

I build all my things in Poser, and only test them in Poser. However most of my existing downloads should work in DAZ|Studio. The exceptions would be dynamic clothing, and items that use Poser-specific materials (although the latter can usually be "fiddled").

A quick count reveals that six projects remaining in my cardboard box should be usable in D|S, three will need Poser, and two could be made to work in D|S after some fiddling about with materials settings. So don't be sad, there will be things that you can use... :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's time for something else. This is a string of bunting I made in response to this thread cough some time ago cough. :-)

According to the readme, it's a morphing string of bunting consisting of 24 flags, suitable for church fetes, used car lots, forum flames and celebrations of all kinds.

Each flag has its own material zone so they can be individually coloured to suit your own taste (or lack of it). There are morphs to adjust the amount of sag in the string, and to simulate the wind blowing from the front. Set the morph negative if you want wind from behind (ooer missus)(British humour - other nationalities may ignore this).

Some material files are provided:

  • A set of individual characters which will work in Poser 5 or later. Select the flag in the material room, then apply a character from Morphography > Bunting > Make Your Own. Use ! Blank to return a flag to white. Repeat until happy. :-)
  • Rainbow colours, a default all-white, and a few prefabricated messages which will work in Poser 6 or later. Select the bunting prop (any material), then apply the material from the Morphography > Bunting > Messages library.

The bunting itself will work in Poser 4 or later, although you'll have to apply the materials yourself, sorry.

It hasn't been tested in DAZ|Studio; the basic prop should work, but again the materials will need applying manually.

Because the flags are single sided, bunting with a message shouldn't be rendered from the back - you'll see the characters in mirror image. Plain colours are fine, though.

Happy Monday everyone, and thanks for all the thanks!

Next up is a mattress prop with various morphs, mostly intended to give the impression (pun intended) of the surface being squashed by someone sitting or lying on it.

A filthy, disgusting texture is included suitable for use in any kidnapper's lair / drug abuser's squat / doss-house / etc...

I hope Laurie can forgive me for what I did to her pretty floral tile. :-)

Attached Link: weskit_V3.zip (593KB)

file_488990.png

Greetings box-lovers. Today we have a sort of waistcoat / bolero for DAZ's Victoria 3 figure, in a style which I remember fondly from the '60s; but as they say, if you can remember the '60s you weren't really there. ;-)

This project has been around - not since the '60s, but at least since 2008 when the Nancy Boots for V3 were released. I used it in the publicity shot for the boots, and in other pictures since then. All I can say is that I meant to release it as part of a complete outfit that was never finished.

The Weskit is made to conform to V3, but could probably be parented to other figures after scaling and moving since it isn't close fitting.

All morphs are best controlled from the BODY actor. There are fairly primitive morphs to open the front a little, but these will be unconvincing if over-used. Thickness brings the lining closer to the figure, while Inflate puffs out the outer surface for a sort of down-filled effect; that is, if you think it suitable for winter wear...

The Weskit was assembled in Poser 7, so you will see a warning if you load it into a previous version; this can safely be ignored. To the best of my knowledge it should work in all versions from Poser 4 upwards, and also in DAZ|Studio although I haven't tested it.

The default textures (included in the zip) are shared with the Morphography Jean Skirt, so if you've previously installed that you may get a file conflict - this can safely be ignored.

Herre's something else that didn't quite turn out right. For some reason, the reflections are screwed up in ways which I don't think are connected to the way the UV mapping inevitably gets distorted as the morphs operate. In hindsight it might have been easier to make an animated displacement map, but Firefly has issues with displacement and reflections, and my modelling skills are better than my displacement map making skills. :)

However it works quite well for still images and I've used it that way several times.

The refractive water material will not work in DAZ|Studio, but I'm sure that equivalent water materials are available.

This is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind when I started this thread, so go for it - and if you come up with some interesting use for anything here, please share it!

And thanks for the hugs from wintery Poland. Just what I needed. cough :D

This one has been floating around for ages, but it's winter-time again - and Victoria 3 needs to keep warm just like everyone else.

There will be three different versions, to give the alternative sleeves shown here.

The belt is included, BTW.

The only part of this project that I found in my odds 'n' ends box was a reference photo of the dress - but I felt inspired to go ahead and make it anyway, while I was in a making things mood.

The dress will be dynamic, and I've made a morph for a more Twiggy-esque '60s look. The go-go-boots will conform to V4.

EnglishBob, I downloaded your morphing mattress and used it to replace the one that's part of XCalPro's "classic" Trek recovery bed.  I also used it for the pillow.  The glittery fabric may obscure it, but I did "depress" the areas where the hapless security guard's body intersected with the mattress geometry.

What a clever solution you devised!  In case anyone reading this who has not yet grabbed this goody, 'Bob made 45 morph zones, 5 across its width and 9 along its length.  With this arrangement, one can "depress" the appropriate areas where you position your figure.  You are NOT limited to specific reclining poses.

A smart alternative when you don't want to struggle with "dynamic cloth" or "magnets".

Sincerely,

Bill

Tempt the Hand of Fate and it'll give you the "finger"!

EnglishBob ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2013 at 6:10 PM

Cool work Bill, and thanks for showing me! Glad you could make use of it and that you appreciated the morph system. I wanted something that could be laid on, sat on, or jumped on at will. There are dynamic solutions about, but they can be tricky to use. This is close enough for jazz in the majority of cases. ;)

The holidays are over, and sad to say I haven't got much further with the projects illustrated above. I'm also working on Lyne's Giraffe, which is approaching useability.

I didn't do anything more to the sweater, unfortunately; but posting the work in progress for the '60s dress did make me realise that the shape was wrong for the period. ;)

Alisa ( ) posted Sat, 05 January 2013 at 6:24 PM

Stand back, everybody. Give the patient some room. I think they can be revived. Nurse! Charge the paddles! CLEAR!

fzzzt!

All right, this is getting too silly. Time to stop messing around and post this a) while there are still some people left using V3 and b) while it's winter and the thing might be slightly topical (apologies to my readers in the Southern hemisphere).

Anyhow - here's a long, polo-necked sweater for DAZ's Victoria 3 figure, to help keep her warm in winter. If you prefer skimp-wear it will also make a nifty minidress. :) A low-slung belt prop is also included, smart propped to the selected figure's hip. There are three versions to cater for long sleeves, pushed-up sleeves and rolled up sleeves as shown in the picture.

I've also included a handful of utilities - Python scripts and poses - which may be useful to anybody still using generation 3 figures.

Above all, have fun!
