Subject: Some interesting differences using IE vs Chrome

Lyne ( ) posted Sat, 01 June 2013 at 5:21 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 9:22 PM

Hi.. I finally got Chrome...and have been test-using it here. I LIKE the way it somehow keeps the forum posts in their proper order/size!! I am viewing at 125% too... the post stay the right size and does not go under the right hand column of ads... in fact the interface is SO clean, there seems to be more room for everything!

I also opened FOUR pages of this site and never got the odd all white background that IE kept giving me (my MAJOR problem, especially when the gallery upload page went white and I could NOT see to select my merchant credit links). I am THRILLED with this so far....

I made a purchase, and the actual input of words and my render rewards went fine... BUT when I clicked to downloand, I had nothing...I mean I saw nothing- no download progress/information window! This was horrible, so I logged out of Chrome and went back to IE to do my downloads.

It almost seems as if Chrome is 'too simple'.... I can't change my magnifying level on the fly (I actually use that feature in IE a lot).  And more importantly, my friend (who is watching my test/learning about Chrome closely) asked about SECURITY.... she said "does Chrome get security updates"?  And I stopped and went...oh...uh... I have NO idea!

hmm and just now as I hit "preview post" the spacing is odd..a lot of empty space above my first paragraph, a lot between, and a lot at the end. I did not do this myself- I only chose 14px font so I could see what I was writing. Sorry for the "wasted space". (Edit: the final save and view of this post has no extra space at the top-weird.)

I do have to do some research, a LOT more I guess...but for now, at least for gallery viewing/uploading and for forum visits I will use Chrome. For purchases I better stick to IE.  Any suggestions, advice or links to information on the use of Chrome would be greatly appreciated!! And to all at Rendo... this effort on my part to find a way to "be here" at Renderosity is HOW IMPORTANT this site is to me. I do NOT like change.  :)

OH I forgot to mention that Renderosity FRONT PAGE - the large product ads with the blue buttons underneath ARE NOT CLICKABLE to go to the product anymore in IE!!  Both myself and my friend tried to use it today to click a product and it would NOT respond! BUT in Chrome, I got the hand and the ability to click over to the product page.  It seems the programmers REALLY hate IE ?  This is not good... I would give up Chrome if this site ever starts working properly in IE again... for now, I use Chrome ONLY for this site. I like it, in some ways, but mainly it's the utter RELIEF that I can actually use the site here again!

As my PC is somewhat outdated, I am still running XP and can't go any higher than IE 8.
That's why I started using Chrome some time ago.
So far I haven't had any problems with any of the sites I visit.

Changing your magnifying level in Chrome: hold Ctrl and sroll or hit Ctrl + or Ctrl -

For more detailed information about Chrome have a look at the help site.
https://support.google.com/chrome/?p=help&ctx=settings

It gives a quick overview of all the basic and advanced settings and functions.

Oh, and you get program / security updates on a very regular basis.

Chrome and Firefox both update roughly every six weeks give or take a few days.  Chrome 27 (current release) is the last major release using the Webkit rendering Engine, as of Chrome 28 they will be using Blink (a fork of Webkit).

IE uses the Trident rendering engine, and both clients use a different set of HTML standards.  Because of this, you are seeing differences in performance and layout.  That's not the fault of the clients per se, as some of these standards are still in flux.  However proper web development includes heavy cross client testing, and that simply was not done prior to the revamp.

While XP users are limited to IE 8, it is important to release that Windows XP ends support entirely in 2014.   XP users would get a much better web experience using a more up to date client like Chrome or Firefox, however those same people should seriously be considering a OS upgrade in the near future as well.

Lastly, To access the download folder in Chrome, press CTRL+J.

I do Front End Development for a major retailer.   Developers disliking IE has a lot to do with bugs in the IE client, as well as Microsofts lack of following HTML Standards.  For each edition of IE you have to support below 9, you are likely adding hours of development time, as well as increasing your code base with client specfic code.

Some of the older IEs simply do not do certain things well (or at all), like Drop Shadows, Rounded Corners, and transparency.  This means that IE 6,7,8 will get a much different visual layout in some cases.

Additionally, JavaScript parsing and execution is slow in IE in many cases, limiting what interactive features you can do without really slowing down page rendering.

Depending on the design, working with IE can be very very difficult.  Still however, it has a sizable market share (depending on geo-region and site topic) and should be supported.  This of course, causes a increase to development time, testing and bug fixes.  It would help the developers quite a bit if Microsoft didn't force some sites to be rendered with IE 7 standards, even if that person is using IE 8+.  A lot of the 'weird' layout issues commonly seen on the web are a result of that exceptionally poor choice.

Thanks SO much for all your information!!!! I did find the additional help, and you filled in even more. Now I have a better understanding (and also made redo my Chrome home page! :).... I never updated to IE9, because I had heard it was really crappy... maybe by now it is better? I won't update to 9 unless someone knowledgeable (like you) tells me it is NOT glitchy and is safe.    Thanks SO much.. woops already said that.  :)

IE 9 is better than IE 8, IE 10 is better than IE 9.   Personally I do not use IE much, but haven't seen as many issues with 9 as I had with 8.

Which IE you can use is determined by OS

Windows XP - IE 8

Windows Vista - IE 9

Windows 7 / 8 - IE 10

Thanks Fenier... I have Win7...maybe I'll upgrade to 9.... tho having Rendo work SO well with Chrome, may not worry about it...'cept I won't purchase here using Chrome since the downloading does not show.  (IE 8 works for ALL other net activities for me just fine).

If you have Windows 7 you should go directly to IE 10.
